In the past half century, the research on emotions of foreign language learners (FLL) has shifted the focus from an exclusive analysis of negative emotions to a more holistic study of both negative emotions and positive emotions, and currently to mediators of multiple emotions. Of the FLL’s negative emotions, foreign language anxiety (FLA) attracts the most attention. Researchers have widely discussed the relationship between FLA and foreign language achievement, the influencing factors of FLA, the dynamicity of FLA as well as regulation and intervention strategies of FLA. Foreign language enjoyment (FLE) is the most heavily studied research subject on FLL’s positive emotions. Researchers generally focus on the influencing factors of FLE, the dynamicity of FLE and the relationship between FLE and FLA. With the implementation of holistic education, emotional intelligence (EI), a mediator of multiple emotions of FLL, has been becoming a newly hot topic in the field of FLL’s emotions. By reviewing the previous studies, this paper proposes that the future research on FLL emotion needs to expand the research perspectives, enrich the research topics, and innovate the research methods.

Investigating efl learners’ perspectives on vocabulary learning experiences through smartphone applications

Vocabulary acquisition is crucial in second language (L2) learning and can be affected by multi-variables. The fact that all these variables have typically been investigated separately (or, at best, in pairs) potentially obscures important interactions between them. This study comprehensively examines the intricate factors affecting vocabulary knowledge among Chinese learners studying English as a foreign language (EFL).We conducted an investigation involving 200 Chinese EFL learners to identify the relationships between L2 proficiency, vocabulary learning strategies, age of acquisition (AoA), classroom exposure, and their relationships and predictive power on L2 vocabulary breadth and vocabulary depth.L2 proficiency emerged as the most robust predictor of vocabulary knowledge, closely trailed by vocabulary learning strategies, AoA, and classroom exposure. Notably, the use of metacognitive learning strategies such as self-regulated and self-aware learning, was found to be significant. Earlier L2 exposure resulted in a more sufficient vocabulary knowledge. However, the conventional belief that longer classroom sessions lead to enhanced vocabulary knowledge was challenged.Our findings suggest the interconnectedness between L2 proficiency and L2 vocabulary knowledge. The investigation highlights the need for increased cognitive involvement and self-discipline in L2 vocabulary learning. This study also emphasizes the necessity to maximize the efficacy of classroom sessions, together with the benefits for an earlier age of L2 acquisition. Guidance for L2 researchers and instructors in second language vocabulary acquisition is offered.

What affects second language vocabulary learning? Evidence from multivariate analysis

ABSTRACT In this article, we analyse the response of UK academics to the UK government decision to cut international development research funding as part of the overseas aid budget reduction, undertaken in March 2021. This decision affects and will have long-lasting effects on any research project involving the UK and international partners, particularly in Global South contexts. We use Critical Metaphor Analysis (CMA) to analyse news, blogs, interviews that UK-based academics wrote in response to the cuts announcement, from 11 March 2021 to 30 April 2021. We identified the following metaphors: CUTS ARE AN ENTITY; CUTS ARE A THREAT, CUTS ARE ILLNESS, CUTS ARE VIOLENCE; plus, on the other hand, RESEARCH IS HEALTH, RESEARCH IS A JOURNEY, RESEARCH IS CONNECTION. UK academics have used ‘idioms of distress’, which are cultural expressions, often metaphorical, through which people articulate distress. Therefore, our contribution is threefold. First, we suggest that the metaphors used have a persuasive and evaluative aim and function. Second, we open up a space for an interdisciplinarity between CMA and ‘idioms of distress’. Third, we warn about the need for the UK government and responsible institutional bodies to restore communication and trust with the global academic research community in International Development.

Cuts destroy, hurt, kill: a critical metaphor analysis of the response of UK academics to the UK overseas aid budget funding cuts

Vocabulary plays a crucial role in L2 acquisition. This research examined whether Vocabulary Size Test designed by Nation & Beglar (2007) ccould predict learners’ EFL proficiency. 96 Chinese sophomores of non-English majors participated in three tests which included College English Test Band-4 (CET4), College English Test Band-6 (CET6) and Vocabulary Size Test (VST). Result indicated that participants’ vocabulary size was significantly correlated to their scores for CET4, but not to those for CET6. Five explanations were proposed for the results and implications for EFL teaching were also discussed.
