This review paper examines the potential of electrospun nanofibrous membranes as a transformative solution to address the increasing worldwide water issue, with a focus on meeting the rising need for effective and environmentally friendly water filtration technology. The utilization of electrospinning facilitates the manufacturing of nanofibrous membranes that possess distinctive structural characteristics, hence providing an outstanding ratio of surface area to volume and allowing for the customization of membrane features. Notwithstanding notable progress, obstacles such as membrane fouling, scalability, and cost-effectiveness impede their extensive implementation. To mitigate these constraints, the use of standardized testing protocols is crucial for evaluating enduring efficacy and dependability within authentic contexts. The analysis highlights the promising prospects of electrospun nanofibrous membranes in the field of water filtration, with a particular focus on the continuous exploration of material advancements, novel manufacturing methods, and the incorporation of cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and data analytics. This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject and encourage stakeholders and researchers to use electrospun nanofibrous membranes in conventional water purification methods. This will help build a reliable water supply for future generations. 

Progress and prospects of electrospun nanofibrous membranes for water filtration: A comprehensive review

The dissemination of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment can potentially pose risks to ecosystems and human health. Herein, a novel microbial fuel cell and membrane bioreactor (MFC-MBR) integrated system characterized by internal reflux of sludge mixtures was proposed to reduce antibiotics, control the spread risk of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and simultaneously alleviate membrane fouling. The bioelectricity production was distinctly promoted with increasing return flow ratios under sulfamethoxazole (SMX) addition. Besides, reactors characterized by higher return flow ratios achieved a relatively elevated degradation rate of SMX, attributed to the enhanced microbial activities through electrical stimulation. Importantly, the absolute abundance of intI1, sul1 and sul3 significantly decreased in the effluent of reactors characterized by higher return flow ratios. The value of zeta potential and particle size of sludge flocs subsequently increased and the content of membrane foulants dropped with the increasing return flow ratios. Moreover, MFC-MBRs characterized by higher return flow ratios were enriched in antibiotic degrading bacteria (Firmicutes, Thauera) and electrochemically active bacteria (Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota). Therefore, this study provided a theoretical basis for reducing the spread of antibiotics and ARGs while simultaneously alleviating fouling, achieving the best of both worlds, through the novel MFC-MBR integrated system.

A Comprehensive Review of Reverse Osmosis Desalination: Technology, Water Sources, Membrane Processes, Fouling, and Cleaning

One of the major waste streams within the oil and gas (O&G) industry is produced and process water generated during hydrocarbon production and treatment, respectively. In gas production facilities, process water typically has lower salinity (i.e., <10,000 mg/L) which present opportunities for these wastewaters to be treated for beneficial reuse applications via advanced water treatment technologies, such as reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. One of the key challenges for RO membranes application to industrial wastewater treatment is fouling which is frequently attributed to the soluble organics present in the water and/or associated with field chemicals. In this study, a detailed organic characterization methodology, using liquid chromatography with organic carbon detector (LC-OCD) was applied to characterize the organics on a real process water collected from industrial wastewater treatment plant at a gas production facility. Additionally, a rigorous bench-scale testing procedure was implemented to assess the performance of a full-scale RO system with and without activated carbon filter (ACF) pretreatment, making this study the first one to apply LC-OCD methodology on real wastewater to evaluate the fouling of RO membranes deployed at an industrial treatment plant. Bench-scale RO results showed that in the absence of ACF pretreatment, a 12 % decline in membrane permeability (from 1.78 to 1.57 L/(m2-bar-h)) was observed, while no permeability decline was measured after ACF treatment. The organic fouling was confirmed by mass balance calculations on the bench scale experiments as well as Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis on the membrane coupons. Moreover, LC-OCD analysis showed that the ACF inlet has a TOC concentration of approximately 3.06 mg/L; of those 1.29 mg/L (42 %) are hydrophobic, and 1.77 mg/L (58 %) are hydrophilic. After ACF treatment, the hydrophobic organics decreased to 0.65 mg/L, revealing that the ACF is removing >50 % of hydrophobic organics which are likely responsible for membrane fouling. Bench-scale operational and water quality results were comparable to the full-scale RO performance data validating the lab testing procedure implemented in this study.
