Vehicle platooning, which is formed by a group of vehicles traveling in close proximity to one another, nose-to-tail, at highway speeds, has received considerable attention in recent years. However, though it brings many opportunities in self-driving, the security of vehicle platooning is still challenging. In this paper, to secure vehicle platooning, particularly to secure communication and efficient key updating for vehicles in a platoon, we first present the notion of ternary join exit tree. A ternary join exit tree consists of main tree, join tree, and exit tree. The users join in the join tree and leave from exit tree. Then, we propose a new dynamic ternary join-exit tree-based dynamic key management scheme, called TJET, for vehicle platooning, which is characterized by providing efficient key updating for not only vehicle joining and leaving, but also platoon merging and splitting. Specifically, based on the structure of ternary join-exit tree, we devise concrete algorithms for vehicle joining, vehicle exiting, platoon merging, and splitting. Moreover, we also analyze the capacities and activation conditions of join tree and exit tree based on strict mathematical proofs. Detailed security analysis show that our proposed TJET holds desirable security properties including forward security, backward security, and resistance to key control. In addition, performance evaluations via extensive simulations demonstrate the efficiency of TJET.

TJET: Ternary Join-Exit-Tree Based Dynamic Key Management for Vehicle Platooning

Annually thousands of people lose their lives due to traffic accidents. Putting into effect some policies in wealthy countries has significantly reduced traffic accidents together with problems of injury. However, this problem requires special attention in middle-income countries. VANETs, considered among ad hoc networks, in which unfixed vehicles communicate with each other. Two type of different communications have been used in VANETs, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) communications and multi-hop communications. Because of no infrastructure communication between vehicles, Inter-Vehicle Communications or Vehicle-to-Vehicle communications (V2V) are regarded as VANETS. VANETs have different use cases. Its applications are many ranging from cooperative traffic surveillance, route optimization, prevention of collision, forecasting the weather, and information broadcasting such as advertising commodity, goods, and online services. Mentioned applications diversity results in branding these networks as Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). VANETs can create alert systems in a certain distance for awareness of drivers about road and traffic conditions, to help drivers make better decisions and modify their driving habits to reduce these hazards and accidents. In this paper, we implement and evaluate the impact of traffic congestion caused by the number of cars on the detection of the missing packets.

Ensuring cooperative awareness by periodic message beaconing in vehicular environments is necessary to address pedestrian safety. However, high periodic basic safety message broadcasting in dense vehicular environments makes accessing the communication channel very competitive. Furthermore, high-frequency periodic broadcasting causes fast device energy dissipation which is a key issue for small computing devices used in wireless sensor and mobile communications. Therefore, in order to achieve reliable message dissemination for vehicle-to-pedestrian safety, energy loss minimization mechanisms for pedestrian mobile devices should be developed. A broadcast scheme for vehicle-to-pedestrian safety message dissemination:

Sharing spectrum resources in unlicensed bands grants vehicular applications inexpensive and ubiquitous access to wireless services. However, wireless technology coexistence concerns are gaining increased attention. In response, coexistence test methods are now being reported in the literature, and novel solutions are considered in the American National Standards Institute C63.27 Standard for Evaluation of Wireless Coexistence. Furthermore, the IEEE 802 standards committee formed a new study group, named wireless automotive coexistence, operating under the umbrella of 802.19 working group to highlight the increasing concerns of wireless coexistence in the automotive domain. The radiated open environment coexistence test (ROECT) method offers high flexibility to test wireless devices for coexistence. Radio signal propagation during testing is over the air, reducing access to the signal path. Consequently, monitoring instantaneous device performance is a challenge yet to be addressed. This paper introduces a novel method for estimating the channel utilization of multiple, concurrent wireless transmitters sharing the 2.4-GHz ISM band in the context of ROECT. Passively received power measurements were collected during testing, and then a Gaussian mixture model was used to build a classifier for labeling observed power samples relative to their source. Case studies utilizing IEEE 802.11n as an interfering system with an under test system based on either IEEE 802.11n or ZigBee are detailed. Findings demonstrate the mutual effect of spectrum sharing on both interfering and under test systems in terms of per-second channel utilization and frame collision. Experimental results show an overall accuracy exceeding 98%.

Monitoring Radiated Coexistence Testing Using GMM-Based Classifier

Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET), as a subclass of mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs), is a promising approach for traffic security, mobile internet and V2V communication. While the packet loss estimation of VANET impacts routing protocol and transmission control algorithm, it turns out to be an important issue. In this paper, we propose an estimation algorithm for packet loss on VANET, RPLE (Real time packet loss estimation), which uses few probe packets and enhance the estimation accuracy than traditional methods for packet loss on wireless networks. Due to node motion and complex radio environment, packet loss estimation in VANET is a hard problem. However, packet loss estimation impacts routing protocol and transmission control algorithm of VANET, so it is an important issue. Based on mass on-road measurements, we have obtained the general statistical principals of packet loss rate (PLR) by distances on VANET, and we use Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) to present PLR probability density. In that case, to get real-time PLR by sending a few probe packets, RPLE use maximum a posteriori probability method to estimate the current PLR based on the GMM of PLR probability density and the probing result. In real urban road scenario, the experiment results indicate that RPLE can get more accurate PLR estimation by few probe packets immediately.

Estimation of Packet Loss Rate at Wireless Link of VANET--RPLE

Node motion and complex radio environment make packet loss estimation in VANET difficult. However, packet loss estimation impacts routing protocol and transmission control algorithm of VANET, so it is an important issue. In this chapter, we measured packet error of VANET in real urban road, and analyzed the characteristics of packet error in VANET, described packet error by a packet-level Makov (PLM) model and used GMM (Gaussian Mixture Model) to present probability density of packet error, and then proposed two methods to estimate packet error, one is based on PLM model, and another is RPEE (real-time packet error estimation) which adopts GMM of probability density of packet error in VANET.
