Red light emitting cubic Y1.95Eu0.05O3 nanophosphors have been synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion method using ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) as fuel. The systematic studies on the effect of calcination temperature on its structural, photoluminescence (PL), and thermoluminescence (TL) properties were reported. The crystallinity of the samples increases, and the strain is reduced with increasing calcination temperature. SEM micrographs reveal that samples lose their porous nature with an increase in calcination temperature. PL spectra show that the intensity of the red emission (611 nm) is highly dependent on the calcination temperature and is found to be 10 times higher when compared to as-formed samples. The optical band gap (E-g) was found to reduce with an increase of calcination temperature due to reduction of surface defects. The thermoluminescence (TL) intensity was found to be much enhanced in the 1000 degrees C calcined sample. The increase of PL and TL intensity with calcination temperature is attributed to the decrease of the nonradiative recombination probability, which occurs through the elimination of quenching defects. The trap parameters (E, b, s) were estimated from Chen's glow peak shape method and are discussed in detail for their possible usage in dosimetry.

Effect of Calcination Temperature on Structural, Photoluminescence, and Thermo luminescence Properties of Y2O3:Eu3+ Nanophosphor

Trivalent dysprosium-doped cubic yttrium oxide (Y2O3) nanophosphors were prepared by combustion synthesis using glycine as fuel. The resulting products were characterized by Raman and FT-IR spectra to evaluate the vibrational features of the samples. X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the formation of a pure cubic phase of Y2O3. The morphology and selective area electron diffraction measurements were carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. From TEM, it is observed that as-prepared particles have average crystallite sizes of around 23 nm. The luminescent and dynamic properties of Y2O3:Dy3+ were examined as a function of temperature and different concentrations of Dy3+. The luminescence study reveals that these phosphors predominantly exhibit greenish-yellow emission due to strong 4F9/2→6H13/2 transition at 575 nm and a feeble 4F9/2→6H15/2 transition at 488 nm. These results show that the relative luminescence intensity of emission bands changes with different heating temperatures, while the greenish yellow color luminescence as well as Commission International d'Eclairage chromaticity coordinates extracted from the emission spectra were not affected significantly. The strong greenish-yellow emission of Y2O3:Dy3+ phosphor may be useful for applications in solid-state white lamps for general illumination purposes.

Greenish-Yellow Emission from Dy3+-Doped Y2O3 Nanophosphors

Novel one-dimensional europium benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate compressed nanorods have been synthesized on a large scale through direct precipitation in solution phase under moderate conditions without the assistance of any surfactant, catalyst, or template. The obtained nanorods have widths of about 50−100 nm, thicknesses of 10−20 nm, and lengths ranging from a few hundred nanometers to several micrometers. X-ray powder diffraction, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared studies, and thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis show that the nanorods have the structural formula of Eu(1,3,5-BTC)·6H2O. Upon UV excitation, these nanorods exhibit a highly efficient luminescence, which comes from the Eu3+ ions. Moreover, Eu2O3 nanorods could also be obtained via a thermal decomposition method using the corresponding complex as a precursor. Coordination-Induced Formation of One-Dimensional Nanostructures of Europium Benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate and Its Solid-State Thermal Transformation

Uniform Y2O3 hollow microspheres have been successfully prepared via a urea-based homogeneous precipitation technique with colloidal melamine formaldehyde (MF) microspheres as templates followed by a subsequent calcination process. X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results show that the MF templates can be effectively removed, and the amorphous precursor has converted to crystalline Y2O3 during the annealing process. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images indicate that the Y2O3 hollow spheres inherit a spherical shape and good dispersion of MF templates, and the shell of the hollow spheres is composed of a large amount of uniform nanoparticles. Facile Synthesis and Luminescence of Uniform Y2O3 Hollow Spheres by a Sacrificial Template Route

In this paper, we report on the synthesis of nanostructured rare earth oxides (Sm2O3, Gd2O3, Dy2O3) via a facile benzyl alcohol based nonaqueous sol−gel process followed by calcination at moderate temperature. During the synthesis, rare earth acetylacetonates were used as the precursors. The resulting samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescent spectroscopy. The final nanostructured RE2O3 products were observed to possess two typical shapes: stacks of ultrathin nanodisks for Sm2O3 and hierarchical nanosheet microspheres for Gd2O3 and Dy2O3, respectively. This method could be extended to prepare high-quality luminescent Gd2O3:Eu3+ flowerlike superstructures with a strong red emission corresponding to 5D0 → 7F2 transition (612 nm) of Eu3+ under ultraviolet excitation (260 nm). General Nonaqueous Sol−Gel Synthesis of Nanostructured Sm2O3, Gd2O3, Dy2O3, and Gd2O3:Eu3+ Phosphor

In this paper, we report on the synthesis of single-crystalline Y2O3:Eu nanobelts via a simple, rapid, and efficient one-step technique without using any templates or catalysts. The prepared products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission microscopy (HRTEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The effects of pH, reaction temperature, and process time on the phase structure and morphology of the product are studied. The possible growth mechanism of Y2O3 nanobelts is discussed on the basis of the crystal structure of the materials. Photoluminescence results indicate that the Y2O3:Eu nanobelts have a strong red 5D0→7F2 transition.
