Degradation modeling is an effective approach for reliability assessment, remaining useful life prediction, maintenance planning, and prognostics health management. Degradation models are usually developed based on degradation data and/or prior understandings of physics behind degradation processes of products or systems. Further, the effects of environmental or operational conditions on degradation processes and the knowledge about the dependency between degradation processes help improve the explanatory capabilities of degradation models. This paper presents a comprehensive review of existing degradation modeling approaches commonly used in engineering applications. To assist practitioners in understanding the concept of degradation modelling, the existing methods are classified into two broad categories: the data-driven approach and physics-based modelling approach. By systematically reviewing these approaches, we highlight their merits, useful applications and limitations. Finally, we provide a summary and indicate several future research challenges in this important area of reliability engineering.

A review on degradation modelling and its engineering applications

In this paper we review the literature on multi-component maintenance models with economic dependence. The emphasis is on papers that appeared after 1991, but there is an overlap with Section 2 of the most recent review paper by Cho and Parlar (1991). The classification scheme that we choose is primarily based on the various options of grouping maintenance activities: grouping either corrective or preventive maintenance actions, or combining preventive maintenance activities with corrective actions. As such, this classification links up with the possibilities for grouped maintenance activities that exist in practice.

In this paper our effort is to introduce the basic notions that constitute a competing risks models in reliability analysis using Bayesian analysis approach with Gamma distribution as our model and presenting their analytic methods. The Gamma distribution is widely used in reliability analysis and it is known as an natural extension of the exponential distribution. The cases are limited to the models with independent causes of failure, only the scale parameter is a random variable, and uniform prior distribution is used in our analysis. This model describes the likelihood function and follows with the description of the posterior function and the estimations of the point, interval, hazard function, and reliability. The net probability of failure if only one specific risk is present, crude probability of failure due to a specific risk in the presence of other causes, and partial crude probabilities are also included.

Competing risk models in reliability systems, a gamma distribution model with bayesian analysis approach

Degradation data can provide with useful information about the reliability assessment for highly reliable products. In this paper, a method based on performance degradation data is proposed to assess reliability of high reliable long life time products. The degradation process can be described as a gamma process, and then reliability can be assessed based on analysis on failure physical mechanism. In order to adjust the degradation modeling according to the actual inspection results, a Bayesian updating method to improve the lifetime distribution is also proposed. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method. The results presented in the case study show that the updating model can describe the degradation characteristics more accurate than the original one.

Reliability assessment of gamma deteriorating system based on bayesian updating

The optimal inspection and maintenance policy for the multi-unit series system with economical dependence is investigated in this paper. This system is composed of two kinds of units, which are subjected to the deterioration failure and the Poisson failure respectively. Since costs can be saved when several units are jointly repaired instead of separately, the optimal maintenance model for multi-unit system should not limit itself to a simple juxtaposition of the mono-unit models and lead to the complex problem. To solve this problem, a classical opportunistic maintenance policy is extended to coordinate the maintenance of the two kinds of units and minimize the long-run maintenance cost of the system. To get the multi-threshold control-limit policy, the improved Markov decision approach is presented. Finally, a numerical example is put forward to illustrate the implementation of the model and iteration algorithm.

Optimal inspection and maintenance policy for the multi-unit series system

A hybrid maintenance and inspection model is proposed for a series system with n+1 units subjected to two different failure patterns, which include deterioration and random shocks. The stationary laws for the failure process of the system are derived in order to evaluate the long-run average running cost on an infinite span generated by the proposed opportunistic policy. A periodic inspection is employed to monitor the states of system, upon which one needs to decide whether to perform maintenance. The preventive and opportunistic maintenance thresholds for degradation process & inspection interval are the decision variables of the proposed model. The behavior of the proposed maintenance policy is illustrated through numerical experiments. A comparison between the proposed approach and the juxtaposed single-unit policy is given, which demonstrates the advantages of the proposed opportunistic maintenance policy in reducing the maintenance cost significantly.
