We present a wideband circularly polarized (CP) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) with enhanced diversity. In the DRA element, two diagonal edges of the DR were truncated at 45° to obtain a wider axial ratio larger than 0.65 GHz. The DRA element was excited by a cross-ring slot with specific slot-arm ratio through microstrip-line (MSTL) implemented at the backside of the FR4 substrate to generate CP fields. Small triangular stands at the edge of the DR were employed to hold it in place to avoid any degradation from the uncontrollable bonding agent used for attaching DR onto the FR4 substrate. The DRA achieved an impedance bandwidth better than 0.8 GHz with an antenna gain of 4.83 dBi. Using the DRA with the MSTL feed, two-element CP-DRA array was implemented with electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structure etched onto the ground plane of the MSTL. The proposed architecture achieves isolation better than 26 dB over the desired frequency band without any performance degradation while maintaining its compact size in the array. Various diversity analysis was carried out on the implemented circularly polarized MIMO DRA. The measured results demonstrated that the proposed singly fed DRA with EBG on the ground plate is suitable for implementing wideband circular polarized MIMO antennas in a compact size.

A Compact Circularly Polarized MIMO Dielectric Resonator Antenna Over Electromagnetic Band-Gap Surface for 5G Applications

A singly fed wideband circularly polarized (CP) dielectric resonator (DR) antenna (DRA) with four sequentially rotated metallic plates is investigated. The square DRA is excited by a microstrip-coupled cross-slot to generate CP fields. By introducing four vertical metallic plates around the DR, three adjacent axial-ratio (AR) passbands are generated due to the cross-slot-fed DRA, the rotated metallic plates, and the interaction between the DR and metallic plates, leading to a very wide AR bandwidth. A prototype has been fabricated and measured to validate the design. Measured results show that the proposed CP DRA has a −10 dB impedance bandwidth of 46.9%, a 3 dB AR bandwidth of 49.5%, and an average gain of 4.7 dBic within the passband.

A Singly Fed Wideband Circularly Polarized Dielectric Resonator Antenna

A technique is proposed to obtain the dual-band circularly polarised (CP) response along with the miniaturisation of a singly fed rectangular dielectric resonator (DR) antenna. The miniaturised response is obtained by applying the metallic strips on the sidewalls of the DR. The specific format of the applied metallic strips excites the orthogonal degenerate modes. Thus, a dual-band CP response is obtained along with the miniaturisation of antenna. The proposed antenna is designed to obtain the small frequency ratio. The frequency ratio can also be tuned by changing the surface area of the applied metallic strips.

Dual-band circular polarisation generation technique with the miniaturisation of a rectangular dielectric resonator antenna

In this article, a wideband dual-feed, dual-sense circularly polarized (CP) dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is proposed and demonstrated. An L-shaped slot and a vertical metal strip, fed by the same microstrip line, simultaneously excite the antenna. Using this feeding method, a dual-band, dual-sense CP triangular DRA is obtained by employing the DRA mode excited at the lower band and the hybrid mode excited at the upper band. Building on this initial design, a rotationally symmetric bowtie DRA (bDRA) consisting of two triangular dielectrics is proposed for wideband dual-sense CP operation. An additional excited slot mode widens impedance bandwidth and broadens the axial-ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of the lower band. Meanwhile, a higher order DRA mode excitation widens the ARBW of the higher band. The characteristics of these two DRAs are explored via simulation. Moreover, a bDRA prototype is fabricated and measured. The results demonstrate a directional antenna with a wide 10 dB return loss bandwidth of 63.7%, a broad 3 dB ARBW of 27.1% for the left-hand circular polarization, and a broad 3 dB ARBW of 12.8% for the right-hand circular polarization.

Wideband Dual-Feed, Dual-Sense Circularly Polarized Dielectric Resonator Antenna

In this Research article, a circularly polarized Dielectric Resonator Antenna (DRA) that operates in the sub-6 GHz spectrum for future 5G New Radio (5G NR) applications has been proposed. The novel design consists of a Roman Three shaped conformal metal strip excited through a singly fed mechanism. The proposed technique is responsible for circular polarization by exciting the higher-order degenerate modes, i.e., TExδ13 and TEy1δ3.Initially, the roman three shape design produces a narrow 10-dB impedance bandwidth of 10.68% (3.23–3.59 GHz) and axial ratio bandwidth of just 1.47% (3.35–3.41 GHz); to cover the whole 5G NR Bands (n77/n78), the parasitic patch has been introducing at an optimum location on rectangular DRA, such arrangement not only improves impedance matching |S11 | ≤ −10 dB bandwidth by 180 %, i.e., 27.73% (3.26 – 4.35 GHz) but also cover the desired band. Along with this, a noteworthy improvement of ∼ 250% in 3-dB overlapping axial ratio (AR) bandwidth has been attained. In parallel to the Sub-6 GHz 5G NR Bands applications, this antenna can be used for vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) applications. Finally, the fabricated antenna prototype is tested and offers decent performance in desired parameters. The measured results agree reasonably with simulation results.

Bandwidth enhancement by using parasitic patch on dielectric resonator antenna for sub-6 GHz 5G NR bands application

A cross-slot-coupled dual-band circularly polarized rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (RDRA) with a small frequency ratio (123) based on compass navigation satellite system (CNSS) applications is designed, fabricated, and measured The RDRA is excited to resonate at two pairs of near-degenerate orthogonal modes of TE111 and TE113, and a cross slot is introduced to simultaneously achieve dual-band right-hand circular polarization The measured −10 dB impedance bandwidths of 114% and 84%, 3-dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidths of 21% and 22%, and antenna gains of over 54 and 43 dBic are obtained for CNSS B3 and B1 bands, respectively Reasonable consistency is achieved between measured and simulated results of reflection coefficients, ARs, and radiation patterns
