Carbon emissions from human activities are the main cause of climate warming. Under the background of economic and social digital transformation, accurately assessing the carbon emission reduction effect of the development of the digital economy is of great significance for countries to deal with climate warming in the post-COVID-19 era. This paper constructs a dynamic evaluation model of orthogonal projection to measure the level of digital economy development at the provincial level in China from 2007 to 2019. On this basis, the panel fixed effects model and mediation model are used to empirically test the impact of digital economy development on carbon emission intensity and its mechanism. The results indicate that: (1) The development of China’s digital economy is unbalanced among regions, showing a geospatial pattern of decreasing from east to west. (2) China’s carbon emission intensity has a trend of decreasing year by year, and there are geospatial differences of “high in the west and low in the east” and “high in the north and low in the south.” (3) The digital economy development can effectively reduce regional carbon emission intensity through industrial structure optimization effect and resource allocation effect, and the industrial structure optimization effect can suppress carbon emission intensity more obviously. (4) The development of digital economy in different regions has different degrees of reducing carbon emission intensity. The development of digital economy in the eastern region has a stronger inhibitory effect on carbon emission intensity than that in the middle and western regions, and the development of digital economy in economically developed regions can suppress carbon emission intensity more. This paper provides enlightenment for policy makers to deal with climate warming.

Does digital economy development reduce carbon emission intensity?

This study explores how large-scale and low-price industrial land transfer by local governments affects industrial enterprises' pollution emissions in China. While many studies have examined industrial land transfer's implications for the macroeconomic outcomes, little attention has been paid to its impacts on industrial enterprises' pollution emissions. Using data on China's city-level industrial land and enterprises from 2007 to 2014, we find that the large-scale and low-price industrial land transfer significantly increases industrial pollutant emissions. Cities with a larger scale of industrial land transfer experience higher total and per capita industrial enterprise emissions. Moreover, this effect is mainly observed in the central and western regions because of differences in institutional quality. Further analysis suggests that land resource misallocation and land law violations are the mechanisms through which industrial land transfer exacerbates environmental pollution. The findings imply that breaking the monopoly of land transfer by local governments can help reduce environmental pollution. 

Industrial land transfer and enterprise pollution emissions: Evidence from China

Urban design strategies fostering creative workers' sense of identity in creative and cultural districts in East Asia: An integrated knowledge-driven approach

China's oil prices have been supervision for a long time, which has led to oil price distortion (OPD) to some extent. To figure out whether OPD will impede the sustainability of energy, economy, and environment (measured by green economic efficiency (GEE)), this research first estimates OPD from 2003 to 2019. Then, using a non-radial direction distance function under nonconvex technology assumptions, this research calculates the provincial GEE by incorporating capital, labor, energy, and environment efficiencies into a unified framework. Furthermore, the OPD-GEE nexus and their influencing channels are analyzed using the spatial Durbin model. The results indicate that there are serious OPD and the average GEE in the transportation is relatively low. Local OPD correction can improve local GEE but OPD correction in spatially related regions will cause local GEE loss. The heterogeneity analysis implies that the GEE promotion effect resulting from local OPD correction is greater in oil-rich regions, new energy vehicle pilot regions, and regions with water transport. Furthermore, the mechanism analysis implies that OPD correction can improve local GEE through optimizing energy structure, mitigating resource mismatch, and promoting green technological progress; meanwhile, OPD correction in spatially adjacent regions can cause local GEE losses by exacerbating their resource mismatch. This study offers a new understanding of the impact of OPD on GEE and contributes to the promotion of sustainable development through market-oriented price reforms. 

Oil price distortion and its impact on green economic efficiency in China’s transportation: A spatial effect perspective

China’s rural land transfer market has been plagued by issues including poor information transmission, limited scale, and an incoherent structure. In this context, this study collected the data of 337 farmers in Qufu City, Shandong Province, and incorporated into the analysis the acquaintance-based nature of rural society that includes strong geographic ties. Taking the herd effect as the starting point, this paper it considers how farmers in the same geo-network affect the land transfer behavior of individual farmers, and adopts the Probit model to analyze the impact of geo-networks to verify the function of the herd effect in farmers’ land transfer behavior. Then, the IV-Probit model is applied to solve the endogenous problem of the herd effect. The results show that: (1) Farmers imitate the land transfer behavior of other farmers in the same geo-network. Geo-networks positively impact the land transfer behavior of farmers, and the herd effect is apparent in farmers’ land transfer behavior. (2) Farmers’ family background, resource endowment, and cognitive features are key factors that influencing farmers’ land transfer behavior. (3) Farmers’ land transfer behavior is more significantly influenced in groups with low and middle agricultural income than in groups with high agricultural income. This study aims to assist the government in giving full play to the positive role of the herd effect, promoting the leading role of village cadres as leader sheep, and smoothing the transmission of land transfer information. Governments should place more emphasis on developing land transfer platforms and invest more in the construction of farmland infrastructure. This paper may serve as a reference to achieve large-scale agriculture operation via land transfer and promote the prosperity of the land transfer market.

Is There Herd Effect in Farmers’ Land Transfer Behavior?

How did development zones affect China’s land transfers? The scale, marketization, and resource allocation effect

The generation of transnational immigrants’ sense of place in the religious space of the places they move to can protect and promote their integration into the local society by shaping a sense of place identity and belonging through the positive effects of human–environment interaction and the strengthening of the religious beliefs of the migrant community. China is in a period of economic transition in the post-reform and opening-up era, and has become one of the key testing grounds for observing and summarizing the internationally mobile population. However, there is a relative lack of empirical studies at the micro level. It is unclear how the socio-cultural and physical environment in religious places in urban China influences and leads to the construction of identity and local meaning among transnational immigrants. This study uses the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Lourdes in Guangzhou as an empirical case study, distributes questionnaires to foreign immigrants, and applies data mining approaches to analyze the data. The study also explores the knowledge of the rules related to the religious atmosphere perceived by the immigrants in this environment and their place identity, place attachment and place dependency. This study found that a place of worship that supports frequent and interactive ritual activities and provides a natural, harmonious, and solemn green landscape environment can effectively promote foreign immigrants’ sense of local attachment to the place of worship. The establishment of emotional relationships between religious places and foreign immigrants depends on the immigrant community’s satisfaction with the local physical environment and its perceived judgment. The speed of attachment and identity building depends on the light and shadow environment, architectural colors and materials, natural vegetation and other environmental elements related to the creation of the religious atmosphere that people perceive in the place. For Guangzhou City, which is in the process of globalization and transition to “multicultural services”, this study provides local policy makers with a critical reference for decision making on the creation and renewal of religious places in immigrant communities. The provision of more relevant production and living services for the internationally mobile population, and the enhancement of the local identity of the internationally mobile population to the place of migration are directions that academia and society need to explore together in the future.
