A real-time base-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transceiver with a simple symbol synchronization and channel estimation scheme is implemented on only one off-the-shelf commercial field programmable gate array (FPGA). The real-time optical OFDM long-reach passive optical network (PON) system with direct detection over 100 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) employing a cost-effective directly modulated distributed feedback (DFB) laser has been successfully demonstrated experimentally. The experimental results show that the simplified symbol synchronization with low complexity and high accuracy is effective for long-reach optical OFDM transmission systems. After 100 km SSMF transmission, the power penalty at a bit-error rate of 1e-3 is only about 1.1 dB.

We have demonstrated optical OFDM signal generation by an optical phase modulator and applied it in a 40GHz ROF symmetric system. The power penalty for the downlink data after transmission over 50km SMF is smaller than 0.5dB; while for the up-link data, the power penalty can be neglected.

We analyze the signal-signal beating interference (SSBI) when optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OOFDM) signal is directly detected by photodiode at the receiver. We propose a novel training sequence configuration to reduce SSBI. The experimental results show that the receiver sensitivity of the OFDM signal with the new training sequence at the BER of 1 10 3 is 2.4 dB better than that with standard training sequence after transmission over 100 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) at a bit rate of 2.5 Gbit=s.
