Nanocomposites and Polymers with Analytical Methods

Porous silicon has found wide applications in many different fields including catalysis and lithium-ion batteries. Three-dimensional hierarchical macro-/mesoporous silicon is synthesized from zero-dimensional Stober silica particles through a facile and scalable magnesiothermic reduction process. By systematic structure characterization of the macro-/mesoporous silicon, a self-templating mechanism governing the formation of the porous silicon is proposed. Applications as lithium-ion battery anode and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution catalyst are demonstrated. It is found that the macro-/mesoporous silicon shows significantly improved cyclic and rate performance over the commercial nanosized and micrometer-sized silicon particles. After 300 cycles at 0.2 A g–1, the reversible specific capacity is still retained as much as 959 mAh g–1 with a high mass loading density of 1.4 mg cm–2. Self-Templating Construction of 3D Hierarchical Macro-/Mesoporous Silicon from 0D Silica Nanoparticles

The present invention relates to a positive active material for a rechargeable lithium battery, a method of preparing the same, and a rechargeable lithium battery including the same. More particularly, the present invention relates to a positive active material for a rechargeable lithium battery including a compound that can reversibly intercalate/deintercalate lithium and a lithium metal phosphate produced through binding with lithium of the compoound, the lithium metal phosphate existing from the surface of the compound to a predetermined depth, a method of preparing the positive active material, and a rechargeable lithium battery having the positive active material. The positive active material can accomplish excellent cycle-life characteristic and also, suppress battery swelling at a high temperature.

Herein, a method of synthesizing Co2SiO4 at a low temperature of 900 °C is reported. By synthesizing the precursor with a facile hydrothermal method and post-annealing in air at 900 °C, Co2SiO4 with good purity was obtained. The Co2SiO4 nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, XPS and TEM to analyze their structure and morphology. To evaluate their performance as the anode material for a lithium ion battery, the Co2SiO4-based electrodes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic cycling and a rate test. Such electrodes display superior electrochemical performance, such as providing a large reversible capacity as high as 650 mA h g−1 at a current density of 100 mA g−1 after 100 cycles, demonstrating excellent cyclic performance and good rate capacity.

Carbon nanostructural materials have gained the spotlight as promising anode materials for energy storage; they exhibit unique physico-chemical properties such as large surface area, short Li+ ion diffusion length, and high electrical conductivity, in addition to their long-term stability However, carbon-nanostructured materials have issues with low areal and volumetric densities for the practical applications in electric vehicles, portable electronics, and power grid systems, which demand higher energy and power densities One approach to overcoming these issues is to design and apply a three-dimensional (3D) electrode accommodating a larger loading amount of active anode materials while facilitating Li+ ion diffusion Furthermore, 3D nanocarbon frameworks can impart a conducting pathway and structural buffer to high-capacity non-carbon nanomaterials, which results in enhanced Li+ ion storage capacity In this paper, we review our recent progress on the design and fabrication of 3D carbon nanostructures, their performance in Li-ion batteries (LIBs), and their implementation into large-scale, lightweight, and flexible LIBs
