Partial substitution of coke breeze with biomass and charcoal in metallurgical sintering

Iron ores always contain several forms of alumina, which may have different effect on sintering performance. In this paper, sinter pot tests were systematically conducted with various alumina types and contents by means of alumina additives substituting for the corresponding types of alumina, and the relevant action mechanism on sintering performance was clarified by the mineralogy of product sinter. The results show that kaolinite is beneficial to the granulation process rather than other three alumina types. In addition, it contributes to relatively better sintering performance while aluminous goethite ranks the only next, followed by gibbsite and free alumina. Mechanism analysis indicates that kaolinite and aluminous goethite are preferable to achieve relatively lower sinter porosity and higher amount of silico-ferrite of calcium and alumina (SFCA) compared with gibbsite and free alumina. Besides, the former two alumina types are apt to promote the formation of higher strength SFCA such as dendritic and acicular SFCA. Furthermore, much tighter interlocking texture in product sinter is formed as alumina occurs in kaolinite or aluminous goethite. Kaolinite and aluminous goethite are the preferably desirable alumina types for sintering rather than free alumina and gibbsite.

Effect of alumina occurrence on sintering performance of iron ores and its action mechanism

SiO2 and Al2O3 are two important minerals that can affect the mechanical and metallurgical properties of sinter. This investigation systematically studied the influences of these minerals and revealed their functional mechanisms on sinter quality. Results showed that with an increasing Al2O3 content in sinter, the sintering indexes presented an improvement before the content exceeded 1.80%, while the quality decreased obviously after the content exceeded 1.80%. With an increasing SiO2 content, the sinter quality presented a decreasing tendency, especially when the content exceeded 4.80%. Consequently, the optimal content of Al2O3 was ≤1.80% and that of SiO2 was ≤4.80%. The evolution of the microstructure and minerals in sinter showed that enhancing the Al2O3 content increased the proportion of SFCA generated, which improved the sinter’s mechanical strength, while excessive Al2O3 led to the formation of sheet-like SFCA with weak mechanical strength. Increasing the content of SiO2 strained the formation of SFCA and promoted the formation of calcium silicate, the mechanical strength of which is lower than that of SFCA. The research findings will be useful in guiding practical sintering processes.

New experimental data are reported on the liquidus and sub-liquidus phase equilibria in the FeO-Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2 system in air The study was undertaken using equilibration/quenching and microanalysis techniques enabling the compositions of the liquid and solid phases in equilibrium at temperature to be accurately measured The limits of stability and associations of the primary phase fields of hematite (Fe2O3), dicalcium silicate (Ca2SiO4), silico-ferrite of calcium solid solution (SFC), dicalcium ferrite (Ca2Fe2O5), calcium ferrite (CaFe2O4), calcium diferrite (CaFe4O7) have been characterized in the high iron, high CaO/SiO2, low melting temperature region of the system The full extent of the primary phase field of SFC has been determined, as have the conjugate lines joining the SFC and the corresponding liquid phase over the range of SFC compositions at sub-liquidus temperatures

Experimental Phase Equilibria Studies in the FeO-Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2 System in Air: Results for the Iron-Rich Region

The pyrometallurgical industry plays a vital role in producing metals for our modern life. With growing demand of metals and declining grade of mineable ore, innovations become critical for many mining companies. It is necessary to conduct a review of recent improvements to the pyrometallurgical industry on analytical measurement techniques, process and equipment improvements, and computer-based modeling/simulations. Many of those innovations tend to be applied to wider metals, and not be restricted by a specific metal. Therefore, we tried to cover the wide applications of many improvements to wider range of metals to reflect this trend. The challenge of a lack of robust measurement techniques under high-temperature conditions within a furnace hinders optimization of a pyrometallurgical process. Some future opportunities in the pyrometallurgical industry on analytical measurement techniques, computer modeling, and processes and equipment have also been outlined and discussed.

A Review of Recent Advances in Pyrometallurgical Process Measurement and Modeling, and Their Applications to Process Improvement

Silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA) is one of the most commonly-produced phases in fluxed iron-ore sintering, and has long been regarded as an important bonding phase in industrial sinters. It is thus considered to have a significant effect on sinter quality. In this study, a solid solution model and database has been developed for the SFCA phase, and has been incorporated into the thermodynamic software, Multi-Phase Equilibrium (MPE). MPE calculations were compared with the in situ X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) observations of the formation of SFCA phase during sintering. The effects of the raw material composition, temperature and the oxygen partial pressure on the formation of mineral phases in the sinter, as well as the viscosity of the melt formed during sintering under equilibrium conditions, were modelled using MPE. The results show that the formation of SFCA phase can be promoted by increasing oxygen partial pressure and basicity of the raw material. Increases of Al2O3 and MgO content have no significant effect on the SFCA formation under equilibrium condition. The increase of oxygen partial pressure (10−3 atm or above) and basicity also leads to a decrease in melt viscosity, which enhances the fluidity of the melt, and hence, the assimilation of the sinter. However, increases of Al2O3 and MgO result in the increase of melt viscosity.
