Recognition of sustainability issues around water resource consumption is gaining traction under global warming and land utilization complexities. These concerns increase the challenge of gaining an appropriate comprehension of the anthropogenic activities and natural processes, as well as how they influence the quality of surface water and groundwater systems. The characteristics of water resources cause difficulties in the comprehensive assessment regarding the source types, pathways, and pollutants behaviors. As the behavior and prediction of widely known contaminants in the water resources remain challenging, some new issues have developed regarding heavy metal pollutants. The main aim of this review is to focus on certain essential pollutants’ discharge from anthropogenic activities categorized based on land-use sectors such as industrial applications (solid/liquid wastes, chemical compounds, mining activities, spills, and leaks), urban development (municipal wastes, land use practices, and others), and agricultural practices (pesticides and fertilizers). Further, important pollutants released from natural processes classified based on climate change, natural disasters, geological factors, soil/matrix, and hyporheic exchange in the aquatic environment, are also discussed. Moreover, this study addresses the major inorganic substances (nitrogen, fluoride, and heavy metals concentrations). This study also emphasizes the necessity of transdisciplinary research and cross-border communication to achieve sustainable water quality using sound science, adaptable legislation, and management systems.

Various Natural and Anthropogenic Factors Responsible for Water Quality Degradation: A Review

Emerging pollutants (EPs) are chemicals known to cause major impacts on the terrestrial, aquatic life and human health as a result of their chronic and acute toxicity. Although lots of studies on EPs behavior in the aquatic environment are currently available in literature, an urgent requirement exists to complete toxicological studies and develop and implement efficient and ecological methods for their removal. This paper raises some relevant problems related to water environment pollution with EPs, the risks they can generate for aquatic life and humans and opportunities to reduce the effects of pollution by EPs removal. Categories of emerging chemicals of concern in the environment, their sources, fate and impacts, with some examples are discussed. Organic UV filters are shortly presented as a relative new EPs category, with a focus on the need to develop extensive experimental studies on their environmental occurrence, fate and removal. Furthermore, sources for the aquatic environment resulting from discharging EPs directly into rivers from wastewater treatment plants are examined. The incidence of environmental and human health risks related to EPs is also considered. The removal of EPs from the environment as a solution to risk mitigation is addressed, with emphasis on several non-conventional processes involving biological removal of EPs. The paper provides a critical look at the current challenges posed by the presence of emerging pollutants in the aquatic environment, with critical comments and recommendations for further research to reduce the impact of EPs on water and human health and improve the performance of developed methods for their removal.

Seasonal use of pesticides can cause increased concentrations at potable water abstraction sites as a shock load, which can be difficult for conventional treatment processes to deal with. Choosing the right water treatment method to remove pesticides hangs on the nature of pesticides and the effectiveness of the technique. The focus of this review is to discuss the current developments and progress in the use of various techniques for possible removal of pesticides from wastewater. Some of these processes include advanced oxidation, adsorption, activated sludge treatment, bioreactors and membrane technologies. The solo and mixed treatment techniques have been reviewed in detail and analyzed rigorously. The utilization of hybrid disposal technologies exhibit potential for the development of innovative pesticide removal techniques. Form the process effectiveness point of view, it is very important to thoroughly analyze the composition of the influent and identify the best removal technique. Furthermore, study emphasizes on designing of water treatment plant, the decentralization of water treatment and economical approaches for removal of various types of pesticides from wastewater are discussed.

Recent trends and future challenges of pesticide removal techniques – A comprehensive review

The occurrence of emerging pollutants (EPs) is continuously reported worldwide. Nevertheless, only few of these compounds are toxicologically evaluated due to their vast numbers. Reliable analytical methods and toxicity assessment methods are the basis of either the management or the elimination of EPs. In this paper, literature published in 2018 on EPs were reviewed with special regard to their occurrence, detection methods, fate in the environment, and ecological toxicity assessment. Emerging pollutants in water environment: Occurrence, monitoring, fate, and risk assessment

Microplastic particles (MPs), which have been considered as emerging contaminants, are widely found in water environments. In southern China, many apartment owners place washing machines on their balconies, where the separated drain system usually leads to the storm-water pipes, resulting in releasing MPs directly into the environment. In the present study, we firstly obtained the laundry preference of residents in the study area based on a questionnaire survey and then designed a simulated laundry experiment to determine the MFs shed in the laundry process. The approximate amount of MFs discharged into the environment under various scenarios was estimated. The results showed that type of washing machine and detergent had a great influence on the MFs shedding. The use of a front-load machine and liquid laundry detergent pods (LDPs) can reduce MFs shed in the laundry process. If the laundry effluent generated by washing machines placed on apartment balconies flows into the municipal pipe network and is treated by wastewater treatment plants (Andrea Menéndez-Manjón), the environmental load of MFs can be reduced. Taking Nanning, the capital city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, as a case study, the calculated result shows that the number of MFs discharged into the environment decreased by 93% at the optimized laundry mode. This study provides a reference for the control of MFs and the rational revision of the Architectural Design Guidelines in subtropical cities equipped with the diversion drainage system.
