Three dimensional (3D) printing of continuous fiber reinforced composites has attracted great interest in various industrial applications, due to convenient complex geometry manufacturability and material savings. Understanding the mechanical properties of 3D printed composites is required for design and simulation. Hence, this paper aims to carry out a comprehensive study on tension, compression, bend and impact properties as well as failure behavior of 3D printed continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic (CCFRT) composites. The results show that the print fiber filament fill pattern significantly affect the mechanical properties of CCFRTs. Low strain rate has influence on failure mode and micro failure mechanism, but possesses no strong effect on the tensile elastic modulus and strength. Based on the data from longitudinal (0°) and transverse (90°) specimens, the mechanical properties of cross (0°/90°) specimens for three-point bend and unnotched Charpy impact can be predicted by the rule of mixing. However, it is not suitable for the notched specimens. The notch reduced the impact strength of cross specimens by 61.04%, indicating significant notch sensitivity. This study could provide some insights for testing and applying 3D printed continuous fiber composites. 

Mechanical characterization of 3D printed continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites

The extrusion-based additive manufacturing (AM) is currently the most common there-dimensional (3D) printing for the fabrication of polymer components. In this study, the fracture behavior of 3D-printed polymer parts is investigated. To this aim, polylactic acid material (PLA) was used to print intact and defected specimens based on the fused deposition modeling (FDM) process. The specimens were printed with three different raster directions to determine their effect on the fracture behavior of the parts. Moreover, wood-reinforced PLA material was used to print another group of test coupons. All specimens were subjected to a series of tensile tests and their fracture behaviors are investigated. Based on the comparison of the results, the influence of reinforcement is determined. In addition, parallel to the experiments, a series of finite element analyses were conducted utilizing the anisotropic phase-field fracture model. For an efficient calculation, we treated the whole specimen as a homogenized solid where the anisotropic property of the layered material is considered in the formulation. By calibrating the model based on the experimental measurement, one can predict the anisotropic fracture behavior of the 3D-printed part with high precision. Since applications of 3D-printed composites have been significantly increased, the results of this study can be used for optimization, further numerical analysis, and next development. 

Fracture behavior of anisotropic 3D-printed parts: Experiments and numerical simulations

A novel 3D printing strategy for continuous glass fiber reinforced polylactic acid (CGF/PLA) composites was proposed. CGF/PLA filament was prepared by a melting impregnation device, and then CGF/PLA filament was directly supplied to the self-modified 3D printing device. The impregnation process was optimized systematically, and the fiber content reached up to 45 wt%. A specific compatibilizer was used and the amount of compatibilizer was optimized to enhance the interfacial bonding between fiber and polymer. The effects of printing parameters such as nozzle diameter, edge width, layer thickness, printing speed and temperature on the mechanical properties and microstructure of the final printed products were studied. The flexural strength and flexural modulus of the printed products reached 312 MPa and 21.5 GPa, respectively. The fabrication strategies proposed in this study can provide a low-cost and high-strength method for the industrial application of 3D printed continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites.
