When the NO X removal method is switched from the second NO X removal method to the first NO X removal method, the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing into the exhaust purification catalyst (13) is made a second target air-fuel ratio which is smaller than the first target rich air-fuel ratio.

A method is disclosed for operating an engine system having an engine 10 with an emission control system including a lean NOx trap 70 (LNT) and a particulate filter (DPF) 76. The method includes, after lean exhaust gas air-fuel ratio regeneration of the particulate filter 76 at an elevated regeneration temperature, using a rich or intermittently rich exhaust air-fuel ratio for a duration lasting until the temperature of the lean NOx trap 70 falls to a minimum threshold temperature. The rich or intermittently rich operation is used to reactivate catalysts in the lean NOx trap 70 and reverse deactivation caused by the elevated temperature lean operation associated with the previous regeneration of the particulate filter 76.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the deterioration of NOx removing performance due to an inactive NOx catalyst during regenerating a DPF which changes exhaust gas into a high temperature and a lean air-fuel ratio. SOLUTION: A control method is provided for an emission control system including a lean NOx trap 70 and a particulate filter 76. Herein, during a period after regenerating the particulate filter 76 with lean-air-fuel-ratio exhaust gas whose temperature rises to a regenerating temperature, but before lowering the temperature of the lean NOx trap 70 down to a lower limit threshold value, the lean-air-fuel-ratio exhaust gas is continuously or intermittently provided into the lean NOx trap 70 for reactivating a catalyst material in the lean NOx trap 70 so that the inactive condition of the catalyst material is reversed which is caused by lean-air-fuel-ratio engine operation at the regenerating temperature along with the preceding regeneration of the particulate filter 76.
