Geopolymerization in concrete production is a sustainable approach that utilizes industrial waste materials in conjunction with alkaline activators, such as sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate. Geopolymer concrete (GPC) has emerged as an environmentally friendly alternative, addressing the pressing concern of CO2 emissions associated with conventional cement manufacturing. However, GPC often exhibits suboptimal ambient-cured strength, necessitating the incorporation of nanomaterials to enhance its mechanical properties. This study delves into the investigation of diverse nanomaterial ratios and their profound impact on GPC properties. The research explores the application of engineering-favored additives, including nano-silica, aluminum oxide, titanium oxide, graphene, and carbon nanotubes, to bolster GPC attributes on a global scale. Notably, nanomaterial-modified GPC surpasses the strength of conventionally heat-cured GPC. In-depth microstructural and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses shed light on the intricate nature of nanomaterial-infused GPC, offering a comprehensive understanding of this pioneering composite. This paper serves as an extensive analysis of nanomaterial integration in GPC, unraveling its effects on the material's characteristics and presenting valuable insights for future application. Incorporating nanomaterials in GPC yields impressive strength gains even under ambient curing conditions, overcoming the limitations of heat curing. Nano material infusion leads to improved concrete densification, reducing sorptivity and water absorption (%) of GPC. Durability against acidic conditions is enhanced by approximately 2–2.5% after the incorporation of nanomaterials in GPC. 

A comprehensive review of nano materials in geopolymer concrete: Impact on properties and performance

Mullite fiber-based porous ceramics is one of the most commonly used high-temperature insulation materials. However, how to further reduce the thermal conductivity and improve the strength of such materials has been a challenge in the field of high-temperature insulation. In this paper, mullite micro/nano fiber-based porous ceramic was prepared by introducing mullite nanofibers into mullite microfiber-based porous ceramics and the effect of microfiber/nanofiber weight ratio on the samples properties were characterized and analyzed. Results showed that the compressive strength and high-temperature thermal insulation properties of the porous ceramics increased significantly with an increase in the nanofiber content. For the porous ceramics with similar density (about 0.50 g/cm3), the compressive strength of the sample with a microfibers/nanofibers weight ratio of 1:2 was 1.43 MPa, which was much higher than that of the porous ceramics prepared with only microfibers (0.26 MPa). Meanwhile, the backside thermal equilibrium temperature of the sample with a microfiber/nanofiber weight ratio of 1:2 at 900 °C environment was 355.8 °C, which was much lower than that of the porous ceramic prepared with only microfibers (476.5 °C). In addition, in order to investigate the temperature resistance of mullite micro/nano fiber-based porous ceramics, the sintering temperatures was increased from 1400 °C to 1500 °C. Results shows that the high-temperature thermal insulation performance of mullite micro/nano fiber-based porous ceramics with high mullite nanofiber content decays more seriously. The back-temperature test showed that the thermal equilibrium temperature of the samples with a mullite micron/nanofiber weight ratio of 1:1 in 900 °C environment increased rapidly from 386.3 °C to 454.2 °C when the sintering temperature was increased from 1400 °C to 1500 °C. The preparation of mullite micro/nanofiber-based porous ceramics provides a new strategy to improve the performance of fiber-based porous ceramics. 

Fabrication of mullite micro/nano fiber-based porous ceramic with excellent mechanical and thermal insulation properties

Ceramic fibers have the advantages of high temperature resistance, light weight, favorable chemical stability and superior mechanical vibration resistance, which make them widely used in aerospace, energy, metallurgy, construction, personal protection and other thermal protection fields. Further refinement of the diameter of conventional ceramic fibers to microns or nanometers could further improve their thermal insulation performance and realize the transition from brittleness to flexibility. Processing traditional two-dimensional (2D) ceramic fiber membranes into three-dimensional (3D) ceramic fiber aerogels could further increase porosity, reduce bulk density, and reduce solid heat conduction, thereby improving thermal insulation performance and expanding application areas. Here, a comprehensive review of the newly emerging 2D ceramic micro-nanofiber membranes and 3D ceramic micro-nanofiber aerogels is demonstrated, starting from the presentation of the thermal insulation mechanism of ceramic fibers, followed by the summary of 2D ceramic micro-nanofiber membranes according to different types, and then the generalization of the construction strategies for 3D ceramic micro-nanofiber aerogels. Finally, the current challenges, possible solutions, and future prospects of ceramic micro-nanofiber materials are comprehensively discussed. We anticipate that this review could provide some valuable insights for the future development of ceramic micro-nanofiber materials for high temperature thermal insulation.

Continuous Rapid Fabrication of Ceramic Fiber Sponge Aerogels with High Thermomechanical Properties via a Green and Low-Cost Electrospinning Technique

How to further improve the strength of fiber porous ceramics has always been the focus of researchers. Herein, inspired by the unique microstructure of natural woods which exhibit excellent mechanical and thermal insulation properties, a high strength mullite fiber-based porous ceramic with wood-like microstructure was successfully designed and fabricated. The wood-like porous ceramics were mainly composed of two kinds of layered structures that are perpendicular to each other. The horizontally oriented lamellar structure was constructed by assembling the fiber membranes layer by layer, and the vertically oriented lamellar structure perpendicular to the fiber layer was constructed by the directional freeze casting method. The results indicated that as to the mullite fiber-based porous ceramics with the similar density (∼0.36 g/cm3), the compressive strength along the X-axis direction of porous ceramics with wood-like microstructure prepared by the directional freeze casting method (3.4 MPa) was much higher than that of porous ceramics prepared by the non-directional freeze casting method (1.04 MPa), owing to the formation of silica lamellar structure perpendicular to the fiber layers. In addition, the wood-like mullite fiber-based porous ceramics also exhibited excellent thermal insulation performance along the X direction due to existence of a large number of pores in the fiber layers. This study provides a new strategy for the preparation of a high-strength thermal insulating fiber-based porous ceramic. 

Porous mullite fiber-based ceramics inspired by biomimetic natural pine wood

Ceramic-based nanofiber materials have attracted attention due to their high-temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, chemical stability, and excellent mechanical performance, such as flexibility, tensile, and compression, which endow them with promising application prospects for filtration, water treatment, sound insulation, thermal insulation, etc. According to the above advantages, we, therefore, reviewed the ceramic-based nanofiber materials from the perspectives of components, microstructure, and applications to provide a systematical introduction to ceramic-based nanofiber materials as so-called blankets or aerogels, as well as their applications for thermal insulation, catalysis, and water treatment. We hope that this review will provide some necessary suggestions for further research on ceramic-based nanomaterials.
