Examining the role of virtue ethics and big data in enhancing viable, sustainable, and digital supply chain performance

Understanding soil organic carbon (SOC) distribution and influencing factors are important to accurately assess soil carbon sink potential and ecosystem quality. However, variations and controls of SOC content and stock under various land use types in the alpine region of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau remain challenging. In this study, soil properties (pH, bulk density, porosity, clay content, soil organic carbon, soil water content, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, available nitrogen and available phosphorus) and environmental parameters (annual average temperature, annual average rainfall, normalized differential vegetation index, altitude, slope, surface roughness, longitude and latitude) were determined across a 600 km east–west transect in the Tibet alpine region for investigating the distribution characteristics and controls of SOC for three land use patterns — farmland (FA), forestland (FO) and grassland (GR). Results indicated that SOC content in the 0–30 cm decreased with increasing soil depth at different reduction rates under various land use types. The average SOC content and stock in GR was significantly higher than that in FO and FA due to the existence of mattic epipdon in GR under high altitude. The non-consideration of gravel content in soil can lead to an overestimation of SOC stock of 0–30 cm soil layer by 15.37 %, 16.70 % and 17.43 % for FA, FO and GR, respectively. Soil properties and environmental conditions simultaneously affect the spatial distribution of SOC under various land use patterns. Pedotransfer functions (PTFs) using multiple regression were used to forecast SOC content in the studied alpine region, which had a better predictive performance than previous published PTFs in the plain area, especially when SOC contents were higher than 40 g kg−1. Our study provides a foundation to build SOC prediction models for other alpine regions in the world, where SOC contents generally exhibit a wider range than the plain areas. 

Spatial variations and influencing factors of soil organic carbon under different land use types in the alpine region of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

The regulation of soil water retention by biochar amendment has been concerned especially in cropland ecosystem. However, the quantification of biochar's effects on soil hydrological properties and crop water use efficiency (WUE) is still limited, and the factors driving the biochar effect need to be investigated. Based on a database with 681 observations, meta‐analysis and structural equation model (SEM) were employed to reveal how biochar amendment affects water supply capacity and WUE. The results showed that biochar application increased available water content (AWC) and WUE by 26.8% and 4.7% on average, respectively. According to the SEM of AWC (R2 = 0.70–0.96), the increase of soil organic carbon (+36.1%) by biochar application can not only directly improve AWC but also indirectly improve AWC by affecting permanent wilting point (−1.0%) and mean weight diameter (+11.1%). The SEM of WUE (R2 = 0.74) indicated that soil moisture and porosity were increased by 10.8% and 7.0% under biochar amendment, which was the reason why biochar improved WUE. This study emphasized that biochar can improve soil hydrology and crop yield by increasing soil water supply conditions. And a rational rate of biochar is the precondition to obtaining the benefits of soil hydrology, otherwise, the excessive use of biochar may lead to the decline of WUE.

Impact of biochar amendment on soil hydrological properties and crop water use efficiency: A global meta‐analysis and structural equation model

• Macroaggregates are the main contributors to SOC mineralization. • The cumulative mineralization in the erosional area was lower than in the depositional area. • The breakdown of soil aggregates during transport accelerates SOC mineralization. Water erosion exerts a profound, but uncertain effect on the terrestrial carbon cycle. Therefore, the soil erosion intensity is uncertain in different terrains. Previous studies have focused on the slope and intensity of soil erosion, while ignored the special terrain such as gully created by erosion. To advance the understanding of the mineralization dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC) from the micro perspective, the relationship between soil erosion and carbon source and sink is expected to be further improved. In this study, we explored the impact of water erosion on SOC mineralization in the areas of gully erosion in Qingyuan mountain, Jiangxi, China by combining the 137 Cs technique and laboratory incubation experiment, calculated the first-order kinetic model parameters of the SOC mineralization of bulk soil and aggregates in the area of gully erosion, and estimated the correlation between the factors that may affect SOC mineralization. The results showed that (1) the mineralization rates of SOC in the bulk soil and aggregates showed fluctuations and reached a peak, and finally became stable. The soil erosion intensity was significantly positively correlated ( p < 0.05 ) with the cumulative mineralization of SOC. (2) The cumulative mineralization in the depositional area (489.67 mg kg −1 ) was higher than that in the erosional area (402.69 mg kg −1 ). (3) Soil macroaggregates were the main contributors to SOC mineralization (63.56%–92.28%), and the soil macroaggregate organic carbon mineralization dynamics was more sensitive to soil erosion. Additionally, significant effects ( p < 0.05 ) of soil mechanical composition, capillary pores, saturated water content, and contents of carbon and nitrogen on SOC mineralization were observed. Erosion increased the risk of SOC loss by mineralization of SOC, especially in macroaggregates. The deposition process caused the enrichment and burial of SOC, and the background level of SOC and the content of macroaggregates in the depositional area were higher than those in the erosional area. The results showed that soil erosion increased the risk of SOC loss by mineralization of SOC based on laboratory simulation. The present study aiming at examining the effect of gully erosion on the mineralization and sequestration of SOC provides important insights into balancing the global carbon budget.
