Materials with good flexibility and high conductivity that can provide electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding with minimal thickness are highly desirable, especially if they can be easily processed into films. Two-dimensional metal carbides and nitrides, known as MXenes, combine metallic conductivity and hydrophilic surfaces. Here, we demonstrate the potential of several MXenes and their polymer composites for EMI shielding. A 45-micrometer-thick Ti3C2Tx film exhibited EMI shielding effectiveness of 92 decibels (>50 decibels for a 2.5-micrometer film), which is the highest among synthetic materials of comparable thickness produced to date. This performance originates from the excellent electrical conductivity of Ti3C2Tx films (4600 Siemens per centimeter) and multiple internal reflections from Ti3C2Tx flakes in free-standing films. The mechanical flexibility and easy coating capability offered by MXenes and their composites enable them to shield surfaces of any shape while providing high EMI shielding efficiency.

2D transition metal carbides, carbonitrides, and nitrides, known as MXenes, are a rapidly growing family of 2D materials with close to 30 members experimentally synthesized, and dozens more studied theoretically. They exhibit outstanding electronic, optical, mechanical, and thermal properties with versatile transition metal and surface chemistries. They have shown promise in many applications, such as energy storage, electromagnetic interference shielding, transparent electrodes, sensors, catalysis, photothermal therapy, etc. The high electronic conductivity and wide range of optical absorption properties of MXenes are the key to their success in the aforementioned applications. However, relatively little is currently known about their fundamental electronic and optical properties, limiting their use to their full potential. Here, MXenes' electronic and optical properties from both theoretical and experimental perspectives, as well as applications related to those properties, are discussed, providing a guide for researchers who are exploring those properties of MXenes.

Metamaterials are composed of periodic subwavelength metal/dielectric structures that resonantly couple to the electric and magnetic fields of the incident electromagnetic waves, exhibiting unprecedented properties which are most typical within the context of the electromagnetic domain. However, the practical application of metamaterials was found critical due to the high losses, strong dispersion associated with the resonant responses, and the difficulty in the fabrication of nanoscale 3D structures. The optical metasurface is termed as 2D metamaterials that inherent all of the properties of metamaterials and also provide a solution to the limitation of the conventional metamaterials. Over the past few years, metasurfaces have been employed for the design and fabrication of optical elements and systems with abilities that surpass the performance of conventional diffractive optical elements. Metasurfaces can be fabricated using standard lithography and nanoimprinting methods which is easier in terms of fabrication of its counterpart 3d metamaterials. In this review article, the progress of the research on metasurfaces is illustrated. Concepts of anomalous reflection and refraction, applications of metasurfaces with the Pancharatanm-Berry Phase, and Huygens metasurface are discussed. The development of soft metasurface opens up a new dimension of application zone in conformal or wearable photonics, the progress of soft metasurface also been discussed in this review. Meta-devices that are being developed with the principle of the shaping of wavefronts are elucidated in this review. Furthermore, it was established that properties of novel optical metasurface can be modulated by the change in mechanical, electrical, or optical stimuli which leads to the development of dynamic metasurface. Research thrust over the area of tunable metasurface has been reviewed in this article. Over the recent year, it has been found that optical fibers and metasurface are coagulated for the development of optical devices with the advantage of both domains. The metasurface with lab-on fiber-based devices is being discussed in this review paper. Finally, research trends, challenges, and future scope of the work are summarized in the conclusion part of the article.

Concise Modeling of Amorphous Dual-Gate In-Ga-Zn-O Thin-Film Transistors for Integrated Circuit Designs

A new source driving circuit to compensate characteristics variations of thin-film transistors for AMOLED displays with high resolution is presented in this brief. The second-generation current conveyor is implemented for rapid current sensing of the feedback line, which is biased with a constant reference-voltage ( $V_{{\mathrm{ REF}}}$ ). Further, the current difference between the current of the driving transistor ( ${I}_{ {D}}$ ) and the programming current, i.e., ${I}_{{\mathrm{ DATA}}}$ , is converted into switching voltage through an amplifier with a shorted resistor, to control the input of a ramp voltage ( ${V}_{{\mathrm{ RAMP}}}$ ). Thus, the degradations in electrical characteristics of the driving transistor can be compensated in real time, and both the influence of threshold voltage ( ${V}_{{\mathrm{ TH}}}$ ) shift and mobility ( ${ {\mu }}$ ) variation are effectively suppressed. The current-error rate of the proposed circuit is less than 3% with ${V}_{{\mathrm{ TH}}}$ shift of ±0.5 V or ${ {\mu } }$ variation of ±15%. In addition, the settling time is less than $4~{ {\mu } }{\text s}$ with the panel loading of 1.5 $\text{K}{ {\Omega }}$ and 100 pF at the OLED current ( ${I}_{{\mathrm{ OLED}}}$ ) levels ranging from 3 ${ {\mu }}\text{A}$ to 200 nA.

A Fast Ramp-Voltage-Based Current Programming Driver for AMOLED Display

A cross-shaped metamaterial absorber (CSMMA) has been introduced to integrate with two-layered polyurethane foam absorbers (PUFAs). By incorporating with CSMMA, microwave absorptive performance of the proposed PUFAs in 8–18 GHz has been remarkably improved for various oblique incident angles under the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) waves. For the TE wave, the effective bandwidths of −10 dB reflection loss for the PUFAs incorporated with CSMMA increase by 0.85 GHz, 1.15 GHz, 1.25 GHz, 1.50 GHz and 1.70 GHz for 0°, 15°, 30°, 45° and 60°, respectively. As for the TM wave, the effective bandwidths of −10 dB reflection loss for the modified PUFAs by CSMMA rise by 0.85 GHz, 1.10 GHz, 1.20 GHz, 2.85 GHz and 2.90 GHz for 0°, 15°, 30°, 45° and 60°, respectively. The proposed PUFAs optimized by CSMMA could operate well at incident angles ranging from 0° to 60° for both TE and TM waves. In addition, the different variation rules of absorption peak intensity of CSMMA have been revealed through the magnetic field distributions under TE and TM waves. Results indicate that PUFAs combined with CSMMA can be utilized for microwave absorbers adapting to both TE and TM waves at various oblique incident angles.

Wide-angle microwave absorption performance of polyurethane foams combined with cross-shaped metamaterial absorber

Left-hand materials have drawn increasing attention from many disciplines and found widespread application, especially in microwave engineering. A sandwiched metamaterial consisting of multi-nested square-split-ring resonators on the top side and a set of wires on the back side is proposed. Scattering parameters are retrieved by high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS) software based on the finite element method. Effects of square-split-ring number on the left-hand characteristics containing negative values of permittivity, permeability, and refractive index have been intensively investigated. Simulated results show that obvious resonant left-hand characteristics could be observed within 8–18 GHz, and the resonant frequency counts are inclined to be in direct proportion to the square-split-ring number over 8–18 GHz. Besides, the proposed sandwiched metamaterial with three square-split-ring resonators and three wires presents the widest frequency band of left-hand characteristics in a range of 8–18 GHz. Further, electromagnetic field distributions demonstrated that the induced magnetic dipole dominates the resonant absorption. The multi-peak resonance characteristics of square-split-ring resonant structure are considered to be a promising candidate for selective-frequency absorption or modulation toward microwave frequency band.
