Core-shell structure nanoprecipitates in Fe-xCu-3.0Mn-1.5Ni-1.5Al alloys: A phase field study

To explore the effect of phase stability on the properties of high entropy alloy, the AlCoCrFeNiTi0.8 coatings are prepared by laser cladding, and then the microstructure evolution and wear resistance of the coatings after heat treatment at various temperatures are studied comprehensively. The coating is composed of BCC-FeCr solid solution matrix, B2-AlNi precipitated phase and in-situ TiC particle phase. The microstructure is stable below 700 °C. The coarsening behavior of AlNi precipitates can be observed after heat treatment at 900 °C, and the precipitates present an Ostwald ripening phenomenon after heat treatment at 1200 °C. There is a close relationship between the wear resistance and the microstructure evolution of the coating, that is, the coarsening and ripening of the precipitates could lead to the decrease of wear resistance. The coating shows a significant decrease in wear resistance after heat treatment at 1200 °C. The volume wear rate of the as-deposited coating is 1.36 × 10−6 mm3·N−1·m−1, while that of the coatings after heat treatment at 700 °C, 900 °C, and 1200 °C is 1.64 × 10−6 mm3·N−1·m−1, 1.96 × 10−6 mm3·N−1·m−1, and 6.96 × 10−6 mm3·N−1·m−1, respectively.

Effect of heat treatment on phase stability and wear behavior of laser clad AlCoCrFeNiTi0.8 high-entropy alloy coatings

Boride layers were grown on the surface of a Co1.19Cr1.86Fe1.30Mn1.39Ni1.05Al0.17B0.04 high-entropy alloy (HEA) by boronizing at temperatures of 900, 950 and 1000 °C for 4 h using nanosized boronizing powders. Characterizations were carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), microhardness measurements, nanoindentation tests, surface profilometry and ball-on-disc type wear tests. The tribocorrosion behavior of the boronized HEAs and the untreated alloy were investigated in air and in 5% HCl. Microstructural examinations revealed complex metal boride layers on the surfaces of the boronized HEAs, consisting mainly of Cr2Ni3B6, Fe0.4Mn0.6B, Cr0.4Mn0.6B and CrFeB2 phases. The boride layers were silicide-free, with thickness and hardness values of 31.95–64.36 μm and 23.49–28.09 GPa, respectively. The boronized HEAs exhibited reduced friction coefficients and low wear losses in both ambient air and 5% HCl compared to the untreated HEA. Due in part to the lubricating and cooling effect of the solution, the untreated HEA and the boronized HEAs showed reduced wear losses in 5% HCl compared to air. In air, the wear mechanism of the boronized HEAs was abrasive wear combined with polishing, while in the as-cast HEA the wear mechanism was abrasive wear accompanied by plastic deformation. In 5% HCl, the wear mechanism of the boronized HEAs was abrasive wear accompanied by oxidation and pitting, while in the as-cast HEA the wear mechanism was abrasive wear combined with pitting.

Development of Phase-Field Modeling in Materials Science in China: A Review

Quinary phase-field model was extended and constructed, and the diffusion-controlled phase decomposition and morphology in thermal aging Fe–Cu–Mn–Ni–Al quinary system coupled with CALPHAD thermodynamic databases were successfully studied. The effects of Manganese composition on the morphology, volume fraction, number density, particles size and growth and coarsening of Cu-rich precipitates were investigated systematically. The simulation results showed that Cu-rich α phase was firstly formed, and the Ni, Al and Mn atoms were partitioned to the Cu-rich phase, leading to the formation of a Ni–Al–Mn-rich intermetallic ring/Cu-rich core precipitate morphology and final conversion of Cu-rich phase to Cu-rich γ phase. The curves of volume fraction and free energy variation with simulation time indicated that Mn element can promote nucleation driving force to overcome the nucleation barrier in initial stage and can also accelerate the precipitation of Cu-rich phase and promote the growth and coarsening processes. Through the analysis of number density (ND) and average particle size (APS), we found that the values of ND and APS of Cu-rich particles increase with the rising of Mn content, which indicates that the higher Mn content will boost the nucleation and growth rate. Moreover, the time exponent at the later precipitation was 0.41, 0.42 and 0.37, respectively, which had deviations with the 0.33 of the LSW’s value, and the growth and coarsening of Cu-rich precipitates were under the mixed mechanisms of Ostwald ripening and coalescence coarsening of neighboring precipitates. These results provided useful information for the preparation of multi-component alloyed steel with excellent mechanical properties to some extent.
