Effects of wearing of metacarpal gloves on hand dexterity, function, and perceived comfort: A pilot study.

This study explored the use of multi-physiological signals and simultaneously recorded high-density electroencephalography (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), and eye movements to better understand pilots’ cognitive behaviour during flight simulator manoeuvres. Multimodal physiological signals were collected from 12 experienced pilots with international aviation qualifications under the wide-angle and impressive vision simulation. The data collection spanned two flight strike missions, each with three mission intensities, resulting in a data set of EEG, ECG, and eye movement signals from six subtasks. The multimodal data were analysed using signal processing methods. The results indicated that, when the flight missions were performed, the pilots’ physiological characteristics exhibited rhythmic changes in the power spectrum of θ waves in the EEG, r-MSSD in the ECG, and average gaze duration. Furthermore, the pilots’ physiological signals were more sensitive during the target mission than during the empty target mission. The results also showed correlations between different physiological characteristics. We showed that specific multimodal features are useful for advancing neuroscience research into pilots’ cognitive behaviour and processes related to brain activity, psychological rhythms, and eye movement.

OPOIRES: A robust non-contact respiratory rate extraction based on optimal points-of-interest selection from an RGB camera

Gloves are used at workplaces to protect hands and fingers from potential hazards. Three types of work gloves were assessed in terms of the strength of grip, carrying, and lifting. Thirty adults (14 males and 16 females) joined as human participants. The strength data were measured under bare hand and three gloved conditions. The grip spans in the grip strength measurements included 45 mm, 55 mm, 65 mm, and 75 mm. The carrying strength was measured for both dominant and non-dominant hands under leg straight and semi-squat postural conditions. The lifting strength was measured at a semi-squat posture. The results showed that glove (p < 0.0001), grip span (p = 0.001), gender (p < 0.0001), and handedness (p < 0.0001) all affected grip strength significantly. Wearing the gloves tested in this study led to a decrease of grip strength up to 22.9%, on average, depending on gender, grip span, and hand tested. Wearing the cotton gloves led to a decrease of one-handed carrying strength ranged from 3.5% to 9.7% for female participants. All the participants took advantages in carrying strength when wearing the cut-resistant gloves. The leg lifting strength data indicated that the effects of the gloves were insignificant. The information of this study is beneficial for practitioners in the design of manual materials handling tasks concerning the use of work gloves.

BACKGROUND: The imaging photoplethysmography (IPPG) technology has been demonstrated to be an effective method for heart rate (HR) monitoring. However, some interference caused by the ambient illumination variation and facial motion severely influences the accuracy of the HR measurement. Some color spaces and color formats are assumed to reduce the interference, and enhance the accuracy of HR estimation. OBJECTIVE: The aim is to identify the optimal color space and format for IPPG based HR measurement. METHODS: Six color spaces and 3 color formats are compared in this study, based on an IPPG based HR measurement system. 424 pieces of videos captured by the system are used for the selection of the optimal color channel and color space; while 10 pieces of videos are for the identification of the optimal color format. RESULTS: The results shows that the green channel of RGB space is the optimal color channel, and RGB is the optimal color space, in respect of the mean squared error of HR estimation. BayerBG 8bit is found to be the optimal color format for video recording, which can significantly reduce the HR estimation error. CONCLUSIONS: BayerBG 8bit color format for video recording, and RGB color space for video analysis is suggested for the IPPG based HR measurement system. The suitable configuration of color space and format could enhance the accuracy of HR measurement.
