Owing to the competitive advantages of cost reduction, system downsizing, and reliability enhancement, position sensorless control methods for permanent magnet synchronous machine drives have drawn increasing attention from academia to industrial applications. In this article, a survey of the major sensorless control techniques for a wide speed range from low to high speeds is presented. The different high frequency signal injection schemes, fundamental pulsewidth modulation excitation methods, and model-based sensorless control are displayed and compared, which is able to facilitate the sensorless control implementation.

Position Sensorless Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine Drives—A Review

This paper gives a comprehensive overview on disturbance/uncertainty estimation and attenuation (DUEA) techniques in permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. Various disturbances and uncertainties in PMSM and also other alternating current (ac) motor drives are first reviewed which shows they have different behaviors and appear in different control loops of the system. The existing DUEA and other relevant control methods in handling disturbances and uncertainties widely used in PMSM drives, and their latest developments are then discussed and summarized. It also provides in-depth analysis of the relationship between these advanced control methods in the context of PMSM systems. When dealing with uncertainties, it is shown that DUEA has a different but complementary mechanism to widely used robust control and adaptive control. The similarities and differences in disturbance attenuation of DUEA and other promising methods such as internal model control and output regulation theory have been analyzed in detail. The wide applications of these methods in different ac motor drives (in particular in PMSM drives) are categorized and summarized. Finally, the paper ends with the discussion on future directions in this area.

Disturbance/Uncertainty Estimation and Attenuation Techniques in PMSM Drives—A Survey

To improve the performance of the surface permanent magnet synchronous motor drives, a sensorless control scheme based on the sliding-mode observer with an orthogonal phase-locked loop (PLL) incorporating two synchronous frequency-extract filters (SFFs) is proposed. The rotor position estimation errors are analyzed. The analysis results show that the harmonic errors of the estimated signal are hard to eliminate completely. Therefore, an improved adaptive notch filter - The SFF is proposed to extract the fundamental wave of the rotor position estimation before applying to the PLL. This method of the PLL combined SFFs can compensate the estimated back electromotive force harmonic error efficiently and adaptively. An experimental driveline system used for testing the electrical performance of the developed magnetically suspended motor is built. The effectiveness and the feasibility of the proposed method are validated with the experimental results.

Adaptive Compensation Method for High-Speed Surface PMSM Sensorless Drives of EMF-Based Position Estimation Error

In this article, in order to optimize the dynamic performance of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) speed regulation system, a nonlinear speed-control algorithm for the PMSM control systems using sliding-mode control is developed. First, a sliding-mode control method based on a new sliding-mode reaching law (NSMRL) is proposed. This NSMRL includes the system state variable and the power term of sliding surface function. In particular, the power term is bounded by the absolute value of the switching function, so that the reaching law can be expressed in two different forms during the reaching process. This method can not only effectively suppress the inherent chattering, but also increases the velocity of the system state reaching to the sliding-mode surface. Based on this new reaching law, a sliding-mode speed controller (SMSC) of PMSM is designed. Then, considering the large chattering phenomenon caused by high switching gain, an improved antidisturbance sliding-mode speed controller method, called SMSC + ESO method, is developed. This method introduces an extended state observer to observe the lumped disturbance and adds a feedforward compensation item based on the observed disturbances to the SMSC. Finally, simulation and experimental results both show the validity of the proposed control method.

A New Reaching Law for Antidisturbance Sliding-Mode Control of PMSM Speed Regulation System

Torque ripples due to cogging torque, current measurement errors, and flux harmonics restrict the application of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) that has a high-precision requirement. The torque pulsation varies periodically along with the rotor position, and it results in speed ripples, which further degrade the performance of the PMSM servo system. Iterative learning control (ILC), in parallel with the classical proportional integral (PI) controller (i.e., PI-ILC), is a conventional method to suppress the torque ripples. However, it is sensitive to the system uncertainties and external disturbances, i.e., it is paralyzed to nonperiodic disturbances. Therefore, this paper proposes a robust ILC scheme achieved by an adaptive sliding mode control (SMC) technique to further reduce the torque ripples and improve the antidisturbance ability of the servo system. ILC is employed to reduce the periodic torque ripples and the SMC is used to guarantee fast response and strong robustness. An adaptive algorithm is utilized to estimate the system lumped disturbances, including parameter variations and external disturbances. The estimated value is utilized to compensate the robust ILC speed controller in order to eliminate the effects of the disturbance, and it can suppress the sliding mode chattering phenomenon simultaneously. Experiments were carried out on a digital signal processor-field programmable gate array based platform. The obtained experimental results demonstrate that the robust ILC scheme has an improved performance with minimized torque ripples and it exhibits a satisfactory antidisturbance performance compared to the PI-ILC method.

Torque Ripple Minimization of PMSM Based on Robust ILC Via Adaptive Sliding Mode Control

In order to optimize the speed-control performance of the permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) system with different disturbances and uncertainties, a nonlinear speed-control algorithm for the PMSM servo systems using sliding-mode control and disturbance compensation techniques is developed in this paper. First, a sliding-mode control method based on one novel sliding-mode reaching law (SMRL) is presented. This SMRL can dynamically adapt to the variations of the controlled system, which allows chattering reduction on control input while maintaining high tracking performance of the controller. Then, an extended sliding-mode disturbance observer is proposed to estimate lumped uncertainties directly, to compensate strong disturbances and achieve high servo precisions. Simulation and experimental results both show the validity of the proposed control approach.
