Adjacency between two vertices in graphs or hypergraphs is a pairwise relationship. It is redefined in this article as 2-adjacency. In general hypergraphs, hyperedges hold for $n$-adic relationship. To keep the $n$-adic relationship the concepts of $k$-adjacency and e-adjacency are defined. In graphs 2-adjacency and e-adjacency concepts match, just as $k$-adjacency and e-adjacency do for $k$-uniform hypergraphs. For general hypergraphs these concepts are different. This paper also contributes in a uniformization process of a general hypergraph to allow the definition of an e-adjacency tensor, viewed as a hypermatrix, reflecting the general hypergraph structure. This symmetric e-adjacency hypermatrix allows to capture not only the degree of the vertices and the cardinality of the hyperedges but also makes a full separation of the different layers of a hypergraph.

Adjacency and Tensor Representation in General Hypergraphs Part 1: e-adjacency Tensor Uniformisation Using Homogeneous Polynomials

Let $f:\{-1,1\}^n$ be a polynomial with at most $s$ non-zero real coefficients. We give an algorithm for exactly reconstructing f given random examples from the uniform distribution on $\{-1,1\}^n$ that runs in time polynomial in $n$ and $2s$ and succeeds if the function satisfies the unique sign property: there is one output value which corresponds to a unique set of values of the participating parities. This sufficient condition is satisfied when every coefficient of f is perturbed by a small random noise, or satisfied with high probability when s parity functions are chosen randomly or when all the coefficients are positive. Learning sparse polynomials over the Boolean domain in time polynomial in $n$ and $2s$ is considered notoriously hard in the worst-case. Our result shows that the problem is tractable for almost all sparse polynomials. Then, we show an application of this result to hypergraph sketching which is the problem of learning a sparse (both in the number of hyperedges and the size of the hyperedges) hypergraph from uniformly drawn random cuts. We also provide experimental results on a real world dataset.

Sparse Polynomial Learning and Graph Sketching

Adjacency and co-occurrence are two well separated notions: even if they are the same for graphs, they start to be two different notions for uniform hypergraphs. After having done the difference between the two notions, this paper contributes in the definition of a co-occurrence tensor reflecting the general hypergraph structure. It is a challenging issue that can have many applications if properly achieved, as it will allow the study of the spectra of such general hypergraph. In most of the applications only an hypermatrix associated to the tensor is needed. In this article, a novel way of building a symmetric co-occurrence hypermatrix is proposed that captures also the cardinality of the hyperedges and allows full separation of the different layers of the hypergraph.

Adjacency Matrix and Co-occurrence Tensor of General Hypergraphs: Two Well Separated Notions

Hypergraph neural networks (HGNN) have recently become attractive and received significant attention due to their excellent performance in various domains. However, most existing HGNNs rely on first-order approximations of hypergraph connectivity patterns, which ignores important high-order information. To address this issue, we propose a novel adjacency-tensor-based Tensorized Hypergraph Neural Network (THNN). THNN is a faithful hypergraph modeling framework through high-order outer product feature message passing and is a natural tensor extension of the adjacency-matrix-based graph neural networks. The proposed THNN is equivalent to an high-order polynomial regression scheme, which enable THNN with the ability to efficiently extract high-order information from uniform hypergraphs. Moreover, in consideration of the exponential complexity of directly processing high-order outer product features, we propose using a partially symmetric CP decomposition approach to reduce model complexity to a linear degree. Additionally, we propose two simple yet effective extensions of our method for non-uniform hypergraphs commonly found in real-world applications. Results from experiments on two widely used hypergraph datasets for 3-D visual object classification show the promising performance of the proposed THNN.
