Galvanic corrosion behavior of AZ91D alloy / 45 steel couple under magnetic field

The corrosion behavior of AZ91D magnesium alloy with or without anodization was investigated. For the non-anodized alloy, both immersion and potentiodynamic polarization tests conducted in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution were employed for corrosion resistance evaluation. In acidic solution ( pH = 2 ), the results revealed that both the matrix phase ( ) and the precipitate ( , Mg 17 Al 12 , intermetallic compound ) were severely corroded. However, in neutral and in alkaline solutions, phase had a higher resistance to corrosion than phase. The better corrosion resistance of phase was attributed to its high Al content. The anodized film formed on AZ91D magnesium alloy might be dissolved in acidic solution. In neutral and alkaline solutions, however, the anodized films were rather stable.

Corrosion Behavior of Anodized AZ91D Magnesium Alloy

This study examines the mechanical and microstructural characteristics of magnesium nanocrystalline (nc) AZ61 alloy, which is produced using the SPS and mechanical milling processes. The results are presented and discussed. Using optical microscopy, it has been shown that the powders underwent twining, and after eight hours of milling, the subgrain boundaries developed, defining the grains with a nanometer size of 60 nm. The AZ61 alloy was sintered by spark plasma sintering at temperatures between 4650 to 5650 degrees Celsius. It has been noted that the grains in pure magnesium magnesium AZ61 alloys are uniformly dispersed, have few pores, and have particle boundaries throughout the SPS process. The mechanical parameters of the AZ61 alloy, namely hardness, compressive strength, and corrosion resistance, increase with increasing sintering temperature by approximately 725MPa, 298 MPa, and 0.18 mm.y-1.

Severe Plastic Deformation of Nanocrystalline AZ61 Magnesium Alloy Composites Prepared by Spark Plasma Sintering Technique

Magnesium alloys are used widely because of its good performance. However, its practical application is restricted by low corrosion resistance. In this study, the effects of corrosion time and NaCl concentration on the corrosion behavior of AZ61 magnesium alloy were investigated from the corrosion morphology and the corrosion rate. These results have displayed that the corrosion rate of AZ61 magnesium alloy decreases with the increasing etching time. Meanwhile, the corrosion rate of AZ61 magnesium alloy increases with the increasing sodium chloride concentration. This is mainly because that the Cl- ion in the solution destroys the protective film on the surface of magnesium alloy and the high Cl- ion concentration accelerates the corrosion rate.
