Research activities related to the development of negative electrodes for construction of high-performance Li-ion batteries (LIBs) with conventional cathodes such as LiCoO2, LiFePO4, and LiMn2O4 are described. The anode materials are classified in to three main categories, insertion, conversion, and alloying type, based on their reactivity with Li. Although numerous materials have been proposed (i.e., for half-cell assembly), few of them have reached commercial applications, apart from graphite, Li4Ti5O12, Si, and Sn-Co-C. This clearly demonstrates that full-cell studies are desperately needed rather than just characterizing materials in half-cell assemblies. Additionally, the performance of such anodes in practical Li-ion configurations (full-cell) is much more important than merely proposing materials for LIBs. Irreversible capacity loss, huge volume variation, unstable solid electrolyte interface layer formation, and poor cycleability are the main issues for conversion and alloy type anodes. This review addresses how best to circumvent the mentioned issues during the construction of Li-ion cells and the future prospects of such anodes are described in detail.

Research Progress on Negative Electrodes for Practical Li‐Ion Batteries: Beyond Carbonaceous Anodes

Lithium-ion batteries have emerged as the best portable energy storage device for the consumer electronics market. Recent progress in the development of lithiumion batteries has been achieved by the use of selected anode materials, which have driven improvements in performance in terms of capacity, cyclic stability, and rate capability. In this regard, research focusing on the design and electrochemical performance of full cell lithium-ion batteries, utilizing newly developed anode materials, has been widely reported, and great strides in development have been made. Nanostructured anode materials have contributed largely to the development of full cell lithium-ion batteries. With this in mind, we summarize the impact of nanostructured anode materials in the performance of coin cell full lithium-ion batteries. This review also discusses the challenges and prospects of research into full cell lithium-ion batteries.

Effect of overcharge on Li(Ni0.5Mn0.3Co0.2)O2/Graphite lithium ion cells with poly(vinylidene fluoride) binder. I - Microstructural changes in the anode

Liquid state soft packed LiFePO4 cathode lithium ion cells with capacity of 2 Ah were fabricated using graphite or Li4Ti5O12 as negative electrodes to investigate the 3 C/10 V overcharge characteristics at room temperature. The LiFePO4/Li4Ti5O12 cell remained safe after the 3 C/10 V overcharge test while the LiFePO4/graphite cell went to thermal runaway. Temperature and voltage variations during overcharge were recorded and analyzed. The cells after overcharge were disassembled to check the changes of the separated cell components. The results showed that the Li4Ti5O12 as anode active material for LiFePO4 cell showed obvious safety advantage compared with the graphite anode. The lithium ionic diffusion models of Li4Ti5O12 anode and graphite anode were built respectively with the help of morphology characterizations performed by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the different particle shapes and lithium ionic diffusion modes caused different lithium ionic conductivities during overcharge process.

An anode is prepared by adopting the following materials by weight percent: 81-94 vanadium lithium phosphate, 1-6.5 superconductive carbon, 0-2.5 conductive black carbon, 0-2.5 flake graphite, 0-2 carbon nano-tube and 4-7.5 polyvinylidene fluoride; a cathode is prepared by adopting the following materials by weight percent: 87-95 cathode material, 1-5.5 superconductive carbon, 0-2 conductive black carbon, 0-2 conductive graphite, 1.5-3.5 styrene-butadiene rubber and 1.5-2 of sodium carboxymethylcellulose. The preparation method comprises the following steps: preparing slurry, coating the anode and the cathode, rolling the anode and the cathode, transversely cutting and separately cutting the cathode and the anode, baking the anode and the cathode, preparing a battery core, welding lugs of the anode and the cathode, shelling and packaging the battery core, baking the battery core, injecting liquid into the battery and thermally polymerizing, forming the battery and dividing volume of the battery. The polymer vanadium lithium phosphate power battery is a lithium ion secondary battery providing drive energy for electric tools and electric vehicles.

The preparation method comprises the following steps of: mixing nano titanium dioxide as a titanium source and lithium salts as a lithium source and fused salt in different proportions, adding anhydrous alcohol, carrying out ball milling, and drying in a vacuum drying oven; and carrying out sectionalized thermal insulation, cooling to room temperature, and grinding to obtain spinel lithium titanate. According to the invention, the advantages in the traditional solid-phase method and liquid-phase method are absorbed: the low-temperature fused salt is used as a reaction medium, so that the diffusion rate of the reactants in the fused salt is obviously higher than that in a solid-phase environment, thereby effectively increasing the reaction rate, shortening the reaction time and saving the energy; and the prepared spinel lithium titanate used as the negative electrode of a lithium secondary battery has excellent electrochemical properties, and thus has wide application prospects.
