Nanodiamonds have excellent mechanical and optical properties, high surface areas and tunable surface structures. They are also non-toxic, which makes them well suited to biomedical applications. Here we review the synthesis, structure, properties, surface chemistry and phase transformations of individual nanodiamonds and clusters of nanodiamonds. In particular we discuss the rational control of the mechanical, chemical, electronic and optical properties of nanodiamonds through surface doping, interior doping and the introduction of functional groups. These little gems have a wide range of potential applications in tribology, drug delivery, bioimaging and tissue engineering, and also as protein mimics and a filler material for nanocomposites.

Crystal defects in diamond have emerged as unique objects for a variety of applications, both because they are very stable and because they have interesting optical properties. Embedded in nanocrystals, they can serve, for example, as robust single-photon sources or as fluorescent biomarkers of unlimited photostability and low cytotoxicity. The most fascinating aspect, however, is the ability of some crystal defects, most prominently the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center, to locally detect and measure a number of physical quantities, such as magnetic and electric fields. This metrology capacity is based on the quantum mechanical interactions of the defect's spin state. Nanodiamonds (NDs) are members of the diverse structural family of nanocarbons that includes many varieties based on synthesis conditions, post-synthesis processes, and modifications. First studied in detail beginning in the 1960s in Russia, NDs have now gained world-wide attention due to their inexpensive large-scale synthesis based on the detonation of carbon-containing explosives, small primary particle size (∼ 4 to 5 nm) with narrow size distribution, facile surface functionalization including bio-conjugation, as well as high biocompatibility. It is anticipated that the attractive properties of NDs will be exploited for the development of therapeutic agents for diagnostic probes, delivery vehicles, gene therapy, anti-viral and anti-bacterial treatments, tissue scaffolds, and novel medical devices such as nanorobots. Nanodiamond Particles: Properties and Perspectives for Bioapplications

Nanoscale diamond has recently received considerable attention due to the various possible applications such as luminescence imaging, drug delivery, quantum engineering, surface coatings, seeding etc. For most of these fields a suitable surface termination and functionalization of the diamond materials are required. In this feature article we discuss recent achievements in the field of surface modification of nanoscale diamond including the establishment of a homogeneous initial surface termination, the covalent and non-covalent immobilization of different functional moieties as well as the subsequent grafting of larger (bio)molecules onto previously functionalized nanodiamond.

We have developed a simple and efficient method for the covalent functionalization of detonation nanodiamond. After homogenization of the surface by borane reduction, the surface was modified with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane. Subsequent grafting of biotin yielded covalently biotinylated nanodiamond, which was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffractometry, thermogravimetry, and elemental analysis. The activity was tested with horseradish peroxidase-labeled streptavidin. The surface loading of biotin was found to be 1.45 mmol g-1. The new material opens the way to covalently bonded diamond bioconjugates for labeling, drug delivery, and other applications.

Biotinylated nanodiamond: simple and efficient functionalization of detonation diamond.

In this paper we present our recent results on the production of primary particles of detonation diamond from strongly bound agglomerates using beads milling and the newly developed BASD (bead assisted sonic disintegration) method in various media. Additionally, the surface functionalisation starting from hydroxyl groups is discussed. These groups can be introduced by reductive surface homogenisation using borane. Further functionalisation includes the grafting of silanes and amino acids.
