The crystal-liquid-glass phase transition of coordination polymers (CPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offers attractive opportunities as a new class of amorphous materials. Unlike conventional glasses, coordination chemistry allows the utilization of rational design concepts to fine-tune the desired properties. Although the glassy state has been rare in CPs/MOFs, it exhibits diverse advantages complementary to their crystalline counterparts, including improved mass transport, optical properties, mechanical properties, and the ability to form grain-boundary-free monoliths. This Review discusses the current achievements in improving the understanding of anomalous phase transitions in CPs/MOFs. We elaborate on the criteria for classifying CP/MOF glasses and comprehensively discuss the three common strategies employed to obtain a glassy state. We include all CP/MOF glass research progress since its inception, discuss the current challenges, and express our perspective on future research directions.

Metal–Organic Network-Forming Glasses

The unique applications of porous metal-organic framework (MOF) liquids with permanent porosity and fluidity have attracted significant attention. However, fabrication of porous MOF liquids remains challenging because of the easy intermolecular self-filling of the cavity or the rapid settlement of porous hosts in hindered solvents that cannot enter their pores. Herein, we report a facile strategy for the fabrication of a MOF liquid (Im-UiO-PL) by surface ionization of an imidazolium-functionalized framework with a sterically hindered poly(ethylene glycol) sulfonate (PEGS) canopy. The Im-UiO-PL obtained in this way has a CO2 adsorption approximately 14 times larger than that of pure PEGS. Distinct from a porous MOF solid counterpart, the stored CO2 in Im-UiO-PL can be slowly released and efficiently utilized to synthesize cyclic carbonates in the atmosphere. This is the first example of the use of a porous MOF liquid as a CO2 storage material for catalysis. It offers a new method for the fabrication of unique porous liquid MOFs with functional behaviors in various fields of gas adsorption and catalysis.

Carbon-based materials as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries and lithium-ion capacitors: A review

Realizing efficient and ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is highly desirable but remains a challenge due to the inherent competition between excited state lifetime and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Herein, we report the bottom-up self-assembly of transparent metal-organic framework (MOF) bulk glasses exhibiting direct ultralong all-phosphorescence (lifetime: 630.15 ms) with a PLQY of up to 75% at ambient conditions. These macroscopic MOF glasses have high Young's modulus and hardness, which provide a rigid environment to reduce non-radiative transitions and boost triplet excitons. Spectral technologies and theoretical calculations demonstrate the photoluminescence of MOF glasses is directly derived from the different triplet excited states, indicating the great capability for color-tunable afterglow emission. We further developed information storage and light-emitting devices based on the efficient and pure RTP of the fabricated MOF photonic glasses.

Highly Efficient and Direct Ultralong All-Phosphorescence from Metal-Organic Framework Photonic Glasses.

The field of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has been incorrectly believed to be purely crystalline. However, non-crystalline MOFs (amorphous MOFs, MOF liquids, and MOF glasses) are starting to emerge as alternative materials, beyond the dictatorial domain of crystalline MOFs. Non-crystalline MOFs present many opportunities, either as novel functional materials themselves, or as vehicles to create other materials. In this extensive Review, we describe the two approaches to preparing amorphous MOFs: (1) the amorphization of crystalline MOFs and (2) the direct synthesis. Special attention is paid to the relationship between preparation method, properties and applications of amorphous MOFs. We also explore the field of MOF liquids and their applications, centering our attention to the phenomenon of melting. Finally, MOF glasses are explained. We highlight the properties and applications of the MOF glasses that are not usually found in crystalline MOFs. New related glass materials such as MOF-blends, flux melted MOFs, MOF crystal-glass composites, MOF and inorganic glass composites, and MOF glass membranes are also reviewed. We conclude the fields of amorphous MOFs, MOF liquids, and MOF glasses by presenting our thoughts on the possible future research directions.
