Overview of carbon nanostructures and nanocomposites for electromagnetic wave shielding

Emerged in the middle of 20th century, composite materials are now one of the hotspot research topics in the modern technology. Their promising characteristics make them suitable for enormous applications in industrial field such as aerospace, automotive, construction, sports, bio-medical and many others. These materials reveal remarkable structural and mechanical properties such as high strength to weight ratio, resistance to chemicals, fire, corrosion and wear; being economical to manufacture. Herein, an overview of composite materials, their characterization, classification and main advantages linked to physical and mechanical properties based on the recent studies are presented. There, were presented the conventional manufacturing techniques of composite and their applications. It was highlighted the tremendous need to discovery new generation of composites that should incorporate the synthetic or natural materials by implementing new efficient manufacturing processes. In the combination of matrix and reinforcement materials, the use of natural materials as constituent are compulsory in order to obtain a complete material degradable as environmentally friendly.

Recent progress of reinforcement materials: a comprehensive overview of composite materials

The rapid development of wearable smart devices has contributed to the enormous demands for smart flexible strain sensors. However, to date, the poor stretchability and sensitivity of conventional metals or inorganic semiconductor-based strain sensors have restricted their application in this field to some extent, and hence many efforts have been devoted to find suitable candidates to overcome these limitations. Recently, novel resistive-type electrically conductive polymer composites (ECPCs)-based strain sensors have attracted attention based on their merits of light weight, flexibility, stretchability, and easy processing, thus showing great potential applications in the fields of human movement detection, artificial muscles, human–machine interfaces, soft robotic skin, etc. For ECPCs-based strain sensors, the conductive filler type and the phase morphology design have important influences on the sensing property. Meanwhile, to achieve a successful application toward wearable devices, several imperative features, including a self-healing capability, superhydrophobicity, and good light transmission, need to be considered. The aim of the present review is to critically review the progress of ECPCs-based strain sensors and to foresee their future development.

Electrically conductive polymer composites for smart flexible strain sensors: a critical review

A bio-gel derived strategy was used to construct Ni/C nanocomposites consisting of three-dimensional (3-D) carbon networks with embedded nickel nanoparticles. The amorphous carbon prevents agglomeration of the nickel nanoparticles and thus contributes to a good impedance match. The microwave absorption properties of the Ni/C nanocomposites were optimized according to percolation theory for good impedance matching. As a result, microwave absorbing coatings, which have the advantages of thin thickness (1.75 and 1.5 mm) and light weight (25 and 30 wt%), were achieved with excellent absorbing properties (90% microwave absorption) and a broad bandwidth (13.6–18 GHz and 13.2–18 GHz). The absorbing properties were mainly attributed to the dielectric relaxation processes at 2–18 GHz from the multilevel interface, porous carbon materials and nanoscale nickel nanoparticles in the Ni/C nanocomposites. It is believed that this work not only helps to elucidate the mechanism of absorption but also provides a new design paradigm for determining the optimal content of absorbers using percolation theory. The bio-gel derived strategy paves a possible way for the mass synthesis of microwave absorbers.

Bio-gel derived nickel/carbon nanocomposites with enhanced microwave absorption

Silicon nitride was firstly used as anticorrosive pigment in organic coatings. An effective strategy by combining inorganic fillers and organosilanes was used to enhance the dispersibility of silicon nitride in epoxy resin. The formed nanocomposites were applied to protect Q235 carbon steel from corrosion. The anticorrosive performance of modified silicon nitride with silane (KH-570) was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), water absorption and pull-off adhesion methods. With the increase of immersion time, the corrosion resistance as well as adhesion strength of epoxy resin coating and unmodified silicon nitride coating decreased significantly. However, for the modified silicon nitride coating, the corrosion resistance and adhesion strength still maintained 5.7×1010 Ω cm2 and 7.6 MPa after 2400-h and 1200-h immersion, respectively. The excellent corrosion resistance performance could be attributed to the chemical interactions between KH-570 functional groups and silicon nitride powders, which mainly came from the easy formation of Si-O-Si bonds. Furthermore, the modified silicon nitride coating formed a strong barrier to corrosive electrolyte due to the hydrophobic of modified silicon nitride powder and increased bonds.

Preparation method for modified silicon nitride anticorrosion coating

The invention provides a preparation method of a boron nitride-graphene oxide composite anticorrosive filler. Specifically, a boron nitride powder is added in the process of preparing graphene oxide through an improved Hummers method, and the graphene oxide and the boron nitride are composited while the graphene oxide is synthesized. The preparation method improves the hydrophilcity of the graphene oxide and the boron nitride and solves the problems of poor dispersibility in an organic resin and low anticorrosive property in an epoxy coating. The synthesis method is simple and convenient in operation, is easy to realize, and is lower in cost. The synthesized boron nitride-graphene oxide composite anticorrosive filler is added into an epoxy resin, so that the anticorrosive property of the epoxy coating is greatly improved, and the preparation method is suitable for the modification of the boron nitride and graphene oxide anticorrosive coating.
