Recent advances of the interfacial polymerization process in gas separation membranes fabrication

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are proposed as promising candidates for engineering advanced molecular sieving membranes due to their precise pore sizes, modifiable pore environment, and superior stability. However, COFs are insoluble in common solvents and do not melt at high temperatures, which presents a great challenge for the fabrication of COF‐based membranes (COFMs). Herein, for the first time, a new synthetic strategy is reported to prepare continuous and intact self‐standing COFMs, including 2D N‐COF membrane and 3D COF‐300 membrane. Both COFMs show excellent selectivity of H2/CO2 mixed gas (13.8 for N‐COF membrane and 11 for COF‐300 membrane), and especially ultrahigh H2 permeance (4319 GPU for N‐COF membrane and 5160 GPU for COF‐300 membrane), which is superior to those of COFMs reported so far. It should be noted that the overall separation performance of self‐standing COFMs exceeds the Robeson upper bound. Furthermore, a theoretical study based on Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation is performed to explain the excellent separation of H2/CO2 through COFMs. Thus, this facile preparation method will provide a broad prospect for the development of self‐standing COFMs with highly efficient H2 purification.

Self‐Standing Covalent Organic Framework Membranes for H2/CO2 Separation

Abstract Polycrystalline metal–organic framework (MOF) layers hold great promise as molecular sieve membranes for efficient gas separation. Nevertheless, the high crystallinity tends to cause inter‐crystalline defects/cracks in the nearby crystals, which makes crystalline porous materials face a great challenge in the fabrication of defect‐free membranes. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrate the balance between crystallinity and film formation of MOF membrane through a facile in situ modulation strategy. Monocarboxylic acid was introduced as a modulator to regulate the crystallinity via competitive complexation and thus concomitantly control the film‐forming state during membrane growth. Through adjusting the ratio of modulator acid/linker acid, an appropriate balance between this structural “trade‐off” was achieved. The resulting MOF membrane with moderate crystallinity and coherent morphology exhibits molecular sieving for H 2 /CO 2 separation with selectivity up to 82.5.

A review on the advancements in covalent organic frameworks for photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising materials for membrane separation thanks to their adjustable topological structures and surface properties of nanopores. Herein, a melamine (Me) doped COF membrane was fabricated by chemically doping the melamine monomer into TpPa COF, which is formed by the condensation reaction between the 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and p-phenylenediamine (Pa) monomers via interfacial polymerization . The introduction of melamine monomer allows altering both the pore structure and pore surface of the TpPa COF membrane, leading to enhanced hydrogen purification performance. Specifically, the separation factor of H 2 /CO 2 gas mixture by using the melamine doped TpPa COF (TpPaMe COF) membrane reaches 12.7, with hydrogen permeance of 727 GPU, in sharp contrast to the relatively low separation factor and gas permeance of 7.5 and 618 GPU of the undoped TpPa membrane. Besides, the TpPaMe COF membrane shows good running stability, with H 2 /CO 2 separation performance well surpasses the Robeson 2008 upper bound.
