This paper presents ultrathin and highly sensitive input/output devices consisting of a capacitive touch sensor (Cap-TSP) integrated on thin-film-encapsulated active-matrix organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The optimal structure of the electrically noise-free capacitive touch sensor, which is assembled on a thin-film-encapsulated active-matrix OLED (AMOLED) display, is obtained by investigating the internal electrical field distribution and capacitance change based on the Q3D Extractor model. Electrostatic simulations have verified malfunction-free electrical signals for 4-in diagonal-sized capacitive touch sensors on AMOLEDs possessing a 100-μm-thick optically clear adhesive (OCA, er = 1.4) layer. The prototype OLED platform using the capacitive touch sensors exhibits an overall thickness of 1.2 mm, which is the lowest thickness for commercially available OLED platforms.

A Highly Sensitive Capacitive Touch Sensor Integrated on a Thin-Film-Encapsulated Active-Matrix OLED for Ultrathin Displays

A touch controller is proposed for on-cell capacitive touch screen panel systems. The proposed IC adopts the differential sensing method to enhance the dynamic range of sensing voltage and to be robust to display noise. The measurement results show that the maximum reporting rate, jitter tolerance, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are 140 Hz, ±0.3 mm, and 12 dB, respectively, when evaluated with a 13.3-inch wide extended graphics array (WXGA) liquid crystal display (LCD) panel with the on-cell touch screen. The proposed IC fabricated via 0.35 μm CMOS process technology occupies a silicon area of 4 mm × 5 mm and consumes a power of 19 mW when the supply voltage is 3.3 V.

A touch controller using differential sensing method for on-cell capacitive touch screen panel systems

In this paper, a highly area-efficient controller for capacitive touch screen panels (TSPs) is proposed. The proposed controller uses a 10-bit successive approximation register analog-to-digital converter (SAR ADC) with an adder to compensate for the capacitance variation in the TSP and for the offset voltage variation in the charge amplifier of the sensing circuit. By using the proposed compensation method, the area of the controller can be reduced by 90.3% of the area of the conventional controllers. The measurement results showed that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the controller increases from 12.5 to 21.3 dB after compensation. Also, its spatial jitter decreases from ±1.5 to ±0.46 mm, which is 7% of the sensor pitch of 8 mm.

A highly area-efficient controller for capacitive touch screen panel systems

This paper presents a novel 7-in capacitive touch panel (CTP) system with a smooth tracking algorithm that accurately estimates the position where the panel is touched and tracks the trajectory of touch. The proposed CTP system consists of a microcontroller unit, a sensor IC, and an interface board. When a user draws at different speeds, the measurement noise caused by the sensor IC induces an error in the touched position and zigzag trajectory, especially when the motion is slow. The fuzzy-logic-based adaptive strong tracking Kalman filter method is implemented in a CTP system to mitigate the effect of measurement noise and provide a smooth tracking trajectory at different speeds. Moreover, the approach effectively measures and quantifies the “smoothness” of the touched trajectory. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method reduces the measurement noise and decreases the mean tracking error by 85.4% over that achieved using the moving average filter.

Position Estimation and Smooth Tracking With a Fuzzy-Logic-Based Adaptive Strong Tracking Kalman Filter for Capacitive Touch Panels

This paper proposes a capacitive touch sensing system (CTSS) using an adaptive chopper stabilization (ACS) method to achieve high noise immunity. The proposed ACS method quickly detects and adaptively filters out external noises, thereby achieving high noise immunity in the proposed CTSS. To verify the proposed ACS method, a readout integrated circuit (ROIC) was fabricated using a 0.35- $\mu \text{m}$ CMOS process technology with 18 V high-voltage devices and was measured using a 46-in capacitive touch sensor (CTS). When no external noises are induced into the CTS, the measured signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the ROIC is 45.8 dB at a reporting rate of 120 Hz. When external noises are induced into the CTS, the measured SNR of the ROIC using the ACS method is 44.5 dB, which is improved by 22.0 dB compared with the SNR achieved without using the ACS method. Therefore, the proposed ACS method effectively eliminates external noises induced into the CTS of the CTSS.
