Starting in the late seventeenth century, observers throughout Europe agree that never before had the world seen so many critics. ‘[T]ill of late years England was as free from Criticks, as it is from Wolves’ , Thomas Rymer attests in his Preface to Rapin (1674) - the work that launched the word's popularity in England - though ‘our Neighbour Nations have got far the start of us’. ‘Criticism’ had entered the vernacular languages from Latin around 1600, first in France and later in England, where Dryden was the first to use it; it arrived in Germany only about 1700, but by 1781 we have the testimony of Kant's first Critique , testimony as well to the term's extraordinary breadth of meaning for the period: ‘Our age is in every sense of the word the age of criticism [ Kritik ], and everything must submit to it.’ The eighteenth century inherited from the seventeenth a primary meaning of ‘criticism’ as a range of activities including grammar, rhetoric, history, geography, and such newly named studies as ‘palaeography’ - the whole range of textually based learning pursued by Renaissance humanists; as Bayle said, ‘le regne de la critique’ began with the revival of letters. This is how the term is defined from Bacon to Jean Le Clerc's great Ars critica , first published in 1697 and much reprinted. In this sense ‘criticism’ appears as a synonym for ‘grammar’, ‘philology’, ‘erudition’, and even ‘literature’, as it still does for instance in Marmontel's entry ‘Critique, s.f.’ in the Encyclopedie; in the Dictionary of 1755, Johnson defines ‘Philology’ simply as ‘Criticism; grammatical learning’. Eighteenth-century writers both refine and extend this definition.

The institution of criticism in the eighteenth century

Die Systemtheorie Niklas Luhmanns ist in erster Linie eine makrosoziologisch orientierte Gesellschaftstheorie. Ihr Einsatz auf mikrosoziologischem Niveau zum Zweck der Bedeutungseruierung konkreter literarischer wie pragmatischer Texte versteht sich daher keineswegs von selbst, sondern setzt Reflexion daruber voraus, ob und wie dieser alles andere als selbstverstandliche Schritt moglich sei. Das Problem findet seine Zuspitzung in der Frage, ob der von Luhmann entwickelte Kommunikationsbegriff nicht nur auf mundliche, sondern auch auf schriftliche Kommunikation und somit also auf Texte im uberwiegend implizierten literaturwissenschaftlichen Verstandnis anwendbar sei. Denn einerseits betrachtet Luhmann als Hauptmerkmal von Kommunikation deren Ereignishaftigkeit, andererseits heist es bei ihm, das die Schrift Kommunikation ent-ereigne. Gerat ‘schriftliche Kommunikation’ da nicht zum Widerspruch in sich? Hier fallt ein Problem an, das nicht nur aus den divergierenden Ansatzpunkten von Systemtheorie und Literaturwissenschaft resultiert, sondern auch eine der Systemtheorie selbst innewohnende Schwierigkeit darstellt. Denn aus der Sicht einer Theorie, welche die gesellschaftliche Kommunikation als ihren eigentlichen Gegenstand definiert, wird man das ungeklarte Verhaltnis von Text und Kommunikation, wie Georg Stanitzek mit Recht bemerkt, “nicht fur einen geringfugigen Defekt halten, sondern eher fur einen im Theoriegebaude herumliegenden Sprengsatz, der darauf wartet, entscharft zu werden” (Stanitzek 1990: 281).

Die Ereignishaftigkeit des Textes

In this important study, Lesley Sharpe assesses Schiller's development as a dramatist, poet and thinker, and provides detailed discussions of all his major works, including his essays on aesthetics. His works are viewed against the social, political and literary background of the late eighteenth century. Spanning a period from the late 1770s to 1805 they explore the insistent themes of the age - the loss of tradition and authority, the individual's claim to self-expression and the search for stability. While the early works focus on the turbulent individual, Schiller later turns to the great public concerns of the French Revolutionary era - legitimacy and power, the exercise of freedom and the relationship between morality and politics. The aesthetic essays explore the vital role of art in integrating the aesthetic, moral and political realms.

(5) In welcher Weise mussen Schillers asthetische Grundbegriffe refor muliert werden, wenn man das systemtheoretische Verstandnis dieses Problems zugrunde legt? (6) Wie verhalten sich die Theorie der asthetischen Erziehung und die Theorie der Kunstautonomie zueinander? (1) Das Problem der Kunstautonomie entsteht dadurch, daB die Kunst einerseits als Mittel der Erziehung, andererseits als ein selbstan diger Zweck behandelt wird. Unterwirft man die Kunst auBeren Zwecken, so hebt man ihre Eigengesetzlichkeit auf oder schrankt sie wenigstens ein. Befreit man sie von auBeren Zwecken und setzt sie mit dem zweckfreien Schonen gleich, dann macht man sie zum folgenlosen und bedeutungslosen GenuB. Das Problem der Kunstauto nomie besteht demnach in der Frage: Wie kann die Kunst ein eige ner Zweck sein, ohne den Zusammenhang mit den hochsten Zwecken der Kultur zu verlieren oder ihnen zu schaden? Da fUr Schiller moralische Werte die hochsten Zwecke der Kultur verkorpern, liegt folglich das Problem der Kunstautonomie im Zusammenhang zwi schen Kunst und Moral und auf theoretischer Ebene im Zusammen hang zwischen A. sthetik und Ethik. (2) Das Problem der Kunstautonomie stellt sich vor dem Hintergrund der Asthetik der Aufklarung einersei ts und Kan ts sowie Goethes Asthetik andererseits.
