Northern Chile intermediate-depth earthquakes controlled by plate hydration
Leoncio Cabrera,Leoncio Cabrera,Sergio Ruiz,Piero Poli,Eduardo Contreras-Reyes,Axel Osses,Renzo Mancini +6 more
TL;DR: This article investigated the variations of the seismic source properties and aftershock activity using kinematic inversions and template-matching, for six large magnitude intermediate-depth earthquakes occurred in northern Chile.
Tracking the Spatio‐Temporal Evolution of Foreshocks Preceding the Mw 6.1 2009 L’Aquila Earthquake
Leoncio Cabrera,Piero Poli,William B. Frank +2 more
- 01 Mar 2022
TL;DR: In this article , a dense seismic catalog via template matching was created to analyze the precursory phase of the Mw 6.1 L’Aquila earthquake that occurred in central Italy in 2009.

Rupture properties of the 2020 Mw 6.8 Calama (northern Chile) intraslab earthquake. Comparison with similar intraslab events in the region
C. Herrera,F. Pasten‐Araya,Leoncio Cabrera,Bertrand Potin,E. Rivera,Sergio Ruiz,Raul Madariaga,Eduardo Contreras-Reyes +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors analyze the local seismotectonic and thermal context of the subducting Nazca plate to understand the trigger mechanism of the Calama earthquake and how it compares with other significant earthquakes in the vicinity.

Ergodic seismic precursors and transfer learning for short term eruption forecasting at data scarce volcanoes
Alberto Ardid,D. Dempsey,Corentin Caudron,S. Cronin,Ben M Kennedy,Társilo Girona,Diana C. Roman,C. Miller,Sally Potter,Oliver D. Lamb,Anto Martanto,Yeşim Çubuk‐Sabuncu,Leoncio Cabrera,Sergio Ruiz,Rodrigo Contreras,J. Pacheco,M. Mora,Silvio De Angelis +17 more
TL;DR: Researchers propose a transfer learning approach to forecast volcanic eruptions at data-scarce volcanoes by identifying shared seismic precursors across multiple volcanoes, demonstrating accuracy comparable to direct training and exceeding benchmarks.

Aftershock Activity at Intermediate-Depth Earthquakes in Northern Chile Controlled by Plate Hydration
Leoncio Cabrera,Sergio Ruiz,Piero Poli,Eduardo Contreras-Reyes,Renzo Mancini,Axel Osses +5 more
- 09 Mar 2020
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the differences of the seismic source and aftershock activity using kinematic inversions and template matching respectively, for the six largest intraslab intermediate-depth earthquakes occurred in northern Chile (Mw ~6.3) since 2010 at depths between 90 and 130 km and recorded by dense strong-motion and broad-band seismic networks.
