Comparison of treatments of peripheral arterial disease with mesenchymal stromal cells and mesenchymal stromal cells modified with granulocyte and macrophage colony-stimulating factor.
Flavia Franco da Cunha,Leonardo de Oliveira Martins,Priscila Keiko Matsumoto Martin,Roberta Sessa Stilhano,Edgar Julian Paredes Gamero,Sang Won Han +5 more
TL;DR: Importantly, MSCs overexpressing GM-CSF produced larger vessels, which is an important long-term advantage because larger vessels are more efficient in the reperfusion of ischemic tissues physiologically.

Codon pairs of the HIV-1 vif gene correlate with CD4+ T cell count
Maria Clara Bizinoto,Shiori Yabe,Élcio Leal,Hirohisa Kishino,Leonardo de Oliveira Martins,Mariana Leão de Lima,Edsel Renata Morais,Ricardo Sobhie Diaz,Luiz Mario Janini +8 more
TL;DR: Since there is not a fully resolved structure of the Vif protein, codon pairs associated with CD4+ T cell count may elucidate key regions that interact with host cell factors and adaptive evolution of vif gene was mostly to optimize viral RNA binding and A3G/F recognition.
Replacement of the Alpha variant of SARS-CoV-2 by the Delta variant in Lebanon between April and June 2021
Georgi Merhi,Alexander J. Trotter,Leonardo de Oliveira Martins,Jad Koweyes,Thanh Le-Viet,Hala Abou Naja,Mona Al Buaini,Sophie J Prosolek,Nabil-Fareed Alikhan,Martin Lott,Tatiana Tohmeh,Bassam Badran,Orla Jupp,Sarah Gardner,Matthew Felgate,Kate A Makin,Janine M. Wilkinson,Rachael Stanley,Abdul Karim Sesay,Mark A. Webber,Mark A. Webber,Rose K Davidson,Nada Ghosn,Mark J. Pallen,Mark J. Pallen,Hamad Hasan,Andrew J. Page,Sima Tokajian +27 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a ten-fold increase in the number of SARS-CoV-2 genomes available from Lebanon was reported, with the Alpha variant accounting for 97% of samples.
Antibiotics select for novel pathways of resistance in biofilms
Eleftheria Trampari,Emma R Holden,Gregory Wickham,Ravi Anuradha,Filippo Prischi,Leonardo de Oliveira Martins,George M. Savva,Vassiliy N. Bavro,Mark A. Webber,Mark A. Webber +9 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that biofilms adapt rapidly to low concentrations of antibiotics and the mechanisms of adaptation are novel, which will be a starting point for studies to further examine biofilm specific pathways of adaptation which inform future antibiotic use.
