A multi-media interface (12) is disclosed for interfacing multi-media voice and data between a host messaging center (14) and various communication networks (8) including, for example, the public switched telephone network (PSTN), the packet switched public data network (PSPDN), and the cellular telephone and paging networks at a very high data throughput. The multi-media interface (12) provides protocol conversions for different telecommunication protocols corresponding to various types of telecommunications media, for example, speech in analog form, speech data in pulsed code modulated (PCM) form, modem data in PCM form, data in analog form modulating sinusoidal carriers, and data in various digital forms associated with a variety of protocol standards.

Multi-media interface

A system in which a single VLAN architecture spans multiple VLAN transport protocols and technologies, including a method and system in which multiple different VLANs may be combined in a single enterprise network. Each LAN-switch in the sytem identifies each frame with an identifier, and associates that identifier with particular VLAN identifiers for each type of VLAN technology. When a frame is bridged or routed from a first type of VLAN to a second type of VLAN, the first VLAN encapsulation is removed and the second VLAN encapsulation is added, with appropriate change in the VLAN identifier for the frame or packet. The identifier may also be implicit for the frame, such as when a particular set of sender's MAC addresses are identified with a particular VLAN. Individual VLANs, of whatever architecture, may be added, configured or reconfigured, modified, or deleted, using control tools associated with the multiple VLAN architecture system. Individual ports may be associated with particular VLANs, or may be designated "dynamic" so that frames or packets associated with those ports are associated with particular VLANs in response to source or destination addresses or other information.

Multiple VLAN architecture system

The invention provides a method and system for switching in networks responsive to message flow patterns. A message “flow” is defined to comprise a set of packets to be transmitted between a particular source and a particular destination. When routers in a network identify a new message flow, they determine the proper processing for packets in that message flow and cache that information for that message flow. Thereafter, when routers in a network identify a packet which is part of that message flow, they process that packet according to the proper processing for packets in that message flow. The proper processing may include a determination of a destination port for routing those packets and a determination of whether access control permits routing those packets to their indicated destination.

Network flow switching and flow data export

The invention provides an enhanced datagram packet switched computer network. The invention processes network datagram packets in network devices as separate flows, based on the source-destination address pair in the datagram packet. As a result, the network can control and manage each flow of datagrams in a segregated fashion. The processing steps that can be specified for each flow include traffic management, flow control, packet forwarding, access control, and other network management functions. The ability to control network traffic on a per flow basis allows for the efficient handling of a wide range and a large variety of network traffic, as is typical in large-scale computer networks, including video and multimedia traffic. The amount of buffer resources and bandwidth resources assigned to each flow can be individually controlled by network management. In the dynamic operation of the network, these resources can be varied—based on actual network traffic loading and congestion encountered. The invention also teaches an enhanced datagram packet switched computer network which can selectively control flows of datagram packets entering the network and traveling between network nodes. This new network access control method also interoperates with existing media access control protocols, such as used in the Ethernet or 802.3 local area network. An aspect of the invention is that it does not require any changes to existing network protocols or network applications.

Method for traffic management, traffic prioritization, access control, and packet forwarding in a datagram computer network

A method is provided for connecting a source of digital data to a computer network. The source of digital data transmits data over a wireless transmission medium to a wireless service carrier, the wireless service carrier multiplexing the digital data onto a high speed digital telephone line. The method comprises the steps of receiving the digital data at a communications chassis such as a network access server, extracting, from the digital data, network access authentication data comprising at least one of the following: (a) a telephone number called by the source of digital data, or (b) a telephone number associated with the source of digital data; transmitting the authentication data over a local area or wide area computer network connected to a network authentication server for the computer network; determining, in the network authentication server, from the transmitted authentication data whether the remote user is permitted to access the computer network; and the authentication server responsively notifying the network access server the results of the step of determining; and authorizing the source of data to access the computer network if the step of determining results in a positive response.

Network access methods, including direct wireless to internet access

A dual digital signal processor (DSP) provides real time links between multiple time division channels of a digital carrier system (e.g. T-1) and a host data processor. Operating only on digital signals, internally and at its interfaces to the carrier and host systems, the DSP exchanges data and control signalling information with the carrier system and data and control information with the most processor, converting the data in passage to different digital forms. At the interface to the carrier system, signals are received and transmitted in a form adapted to diverse terminal equipment of users remotely linked to the carrier system via the switched public network. At the host interface, signals are transferred and received in a form suited to the data process requirements of the host system (e.g. data bytes directly representing alphanumeric characters). Thus, the DSP acts as the equivalent of multiple different types of modems in performing required conversions. The DSP may also perform processing services in order to reduce the processing burden on the host system (e.g. parity checking of data, detection of specific character functions in data or specific tones in audio signals, selective routing of voice to host storage for voice mail applications, etc.).

Real-time digital signal processing relative to multiple digital communication channels

There is disclosed apparatus and a method for extending a parallel channel of the host processor over a serial link to a remote peripheral device. The apparatus includes a microprocessor within I/O channel extension logic which responds to either instructions or data from a host processor. The instructions are of the type commanding the I/O device to perform a specific operation and the data is provided in response to requests for data from the I/O device. The channel extension logic is coupled to the host processor's channel and thus is able to obtain data from the host storage by cycle steal techniques. Within the channel extension logic are means to serialize the information and transmit it in a serial manner over the link. The microprocessor within the channel extension logic creates a frame, including a control byte, which identifies the type of information followed by the data, which frame is then communicated over the serial link to the I/O device. The I/O device also includes a microprocessor and associated logic which responds to the frames communicated by the channel extension logic and generates a frame consisting of a control byte identifying the information type and associated data which is then communicated back over the serial link to the channel extension logic to request action by the channel extension logic or indicate completion of the operation. The I/O device may, for instance, request data be obtained from or stored in the host memory by cycle steal techniques and thereby utilize the features of the host and host channel despite only being coupled thereto by a serial link.
