The method includes receiving an e-mail message and then identifying contact and link data, such as URL information, within the content of the received e-mail message. A blacklist including contact information and/or link information previously associated with spam is accessed, and the e-mail message is determined to be spam or to likely be spam based on the contents of the blacklist. The contact or link data from the received e-mail is compared to similar information in the blacklist to find a match, such as by comparing URL information from e-mail content with URLs found previously in spam. If a match is not identified, the URL information from the e-mail message is processed to classify the URL as spam or “bad.” The content indicated by the URL information is accessed and spam classifiers or statistical tools are applied.

The standardized outputs of the classification tools are then input to a voting mechanism which uses a voting algorithm based on fuzzy logic to combine the standardized outputs into a single classification result. The use of a fuzzy logic algorithm creates a more useful result as the classifier results are not merely averaged. In one embodiment, the single classification result is itself a probability that is provided to a spam classifier or comparator that functions to compare the single classification result to a spam threshold value and based on the comparison to classify the e-mail message as spam or not spam.

The invention is directed to a system and method for determining if a “spam” message is originating from a messaging account by challenging a particular client's outbound email usage with a test that requires verification of content that is easily understood by a human being, not an automated computer program such as those used by “spammers.” If a limit on the number of recipients for outbound messages has been exceeded, a test is presented the next time a client attempts to send a message. The client must successfully answer the test within a relatively short period of time or else the ability to send messages will be disabled. Once disabled, the client can reinstate the ability to send messages by contacting a representative of the message system out of band, e.g., a telephone call to confirm legitimate outbound email use.
