Clusteroluminescence (CL) and through-space interactions (TSIs) of non-conjugated molecules have drawn more attention due to their unique photophysical behaviors that are different from largely conjugated luminogens. However, achieving red and even near-infrared (NIR) emission from such systems is still challenging due to the intrinsic drawbacks of non-conjugated molecules and the lack of theories for structure-property relationships. In this work, six phenolic resins are designed and synthesized based on two molecule-engineering strategies: increasing the number of TSIs units and introducing electron-donating/-withdrawing groups. All phenolic resins are verified as luminogens with CL property (CLgens), and the first example of CLgens with NIR emission (maximum emission wavelength ≥ 680 nm) and high absolute quantum yield (47%) is reported. Experiments and theoretical analysis reveal that two TSIs types, through-space locally excited state and through-space charge transfer state, play essential roles in achieving CL from these non-conjugated polymers, which could be manipulated via changing structural conformation and electron density or altering electron transition behaviors. This work not only provides an approach to manipulate TSIs and CL of non-conjugated polymers but also endows commercially available phenolic resins with high practical value as luminescence materials.

In this paper, we prepared a self-crosslinking amino-functional graphene oxide/styrene acrylic hybrid emulsion (AGO/SA). The styrene acrylic emulsion (SA) was synthesized with acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM) by semicontinuous seeded emulsion polymerization. Then, amino-functionalized graphene oxide (AGO) was prepared via the modification of graphene oxide (GO) with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and reacted with the SA emulsion as a crosslinking agent by in situ polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravity analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were applied to explore the chemical structures and morphologies of the samples. The anti-corrosion performance of the AGO/SA coatings was evaluated by Tafel polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Along with the crosslink between AGO and SA, the micropores in the matrix were reduced, the coating expressed improved corrosion resistance due to the graphene barrier, and the hybrid emulsion with 0.7 wt.% AGO exhibited the best anti-corrosion properties. These results indicate that AGO can act as both a crosslinking agent and an anti-corrosion agent in self-crosslinking hybrid emulsions, which have great potential in the field of environmentally friendly emulsions.

Through-space interaction (TSI) has been proven to play an important role in the newly emerging clusteroluminescence (CL) phenomenon. However, it is still a big challenge to manipulate the TSI at the molecular level due to the unclear relationship between the non-conjugated structure and TSI properties. Herein, the TSI in diphenylmethane is manipulated by breaking its symmetric structures and changing the isolated subunits. Finally, the CL wavelength and efficiency of diphenylmethane are successfully regulated at the aggregate state.
