Film mulching technology has greatly improved the efficiency of agricultural production. However, it also causes environmental problems such as soil contamination. Biodegradable mulch films, which represent environmentally friendly alternatives, present different characteristics depending on regional differences and crop growth differences. This review was based on the literature and data collected from databases such as the Web of Science. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the development, types and degradation characteristics of biodegradable mulch films. The following conclusions are presented: (1) Applying biodegradable mulch films can conserve water, maintain the soil temperature, improve soil nutrition, increase the soil respiration rate, and promote soil microbial activity. (2) Biodegradable mulch films promote crop root system development, suppress weeds, shorten the crop growth cycle, improve crop emergence rates, and expand the planting range of crops. (3) At present, the incomplete degradability of biodegradable mulch films, their relatively high cost and the potential harm to soil from their degradation products still limit their widespread use in agricultural production. The aim of this study is to provide a reference for future research and for the application of biodegradable mulch films in the hope of promoting their role in the sustainable development of agriculture. 

Classification of Degradable Mulch Films and Their Promotional Effects and Limitations on Agricultural Production

Plants possess complex regulatory systems to address the multifaceted challenges of abiotic stresses. Abscisic acid (ABA) governs pivotal processes within this intricate framework, while jasmonic acid (JA) orchestrates plant responses to salt and drought via the ABA pathway. However, the interaction of ABA and JA signalling cascades in facilitating plant adaptation to stress remains mysterious. This study revealed that crosstalk between the JA and ABA signalling pathways regulates Cargana korshinskii responses to salt and drought stress. CkMYC2, a key factor in the JA pathway, modulated endogenous MeJA levels in roots to influence the expression of the ABA receptor-encoding gene CkPYL4. CkPYL4 interacted with CkPP2C, a key negative regulator of ABA signalling, inhibiting the expression of CkCYP707A4, a critical gene in ABA metabolism, thus increasing endogenous ABA accumulation. Further genetic experiments showed that overexpression of CkPYL4 in Arabidopsis thaliana and 84 K poplar plants enhanced the accumulation of endogenous ABA in roots and reduced stomatal density, significantly improving salt and drought tolerance in the transgenic plants. However, CkMYC2 plays a distinct role in leaves, and MeJA increased the expression of CkPYL4 and CkMYC2 in leaves, increasing endogenous ABA levels and decreasing endogenous MeJA levels. Moreover, CkMYC2 interacted directly with both CkPYL4 and CkPP2C, and this interaction occurred on the plasma membranes of guard cells, indicating that PYL4, MYC2, and PP2C synergistically regulate stomatal development by regulating ABA accumulation via the JA-ABA signalling pathway under salt and drought stress conditions. These findings reveal a relationship between the core ABA signalling pathway and JA responses and provide vital clues for understanding plant stress tolerance mechanisms.

Consumers prefer cucumbers (Cucumis sativus) with high antioxidant content, which is often at odds with farmers’ goals of maximizing yield. Therefore, this study aims to explore new methods for fertigation and grafting to optimize the yield and quality of cucumbers. In a greenhouse experiment, we tested fertigation with three different nutrient solutions: the standard as a control (CF) and two new formulations (NF1 and NF2). We also examined grafting in three variants: non-grafted (CG), grafting onto Cucurbita moschata × Cucurbita moschata (G1), and grafting onto Lagenaria siceraria (G2). Our results showed that the highest increase in phenolic content in the flesh of cucumber was observed in the NF2 × G1 treatment (↑ 22.4%). In contrast, grafting and the new fertigation methods generally reduced the phenolic content in the peel. Grafting with G1 significantly increased flavonoid content in the flesh (↑ 59.4% and ↑ 77.3%) but significantly decreased it in the peel. The NF2 × G1 treatment achieved the most significant increases in antioxidant activity indicators, DPPH (↑ 25.9%) and FRAP (↑ 39.4%). For farmers seeking to achieve high yields of greenhouse cucumbers, the combination of NF1 × G1 is recommended, as it resulted in the highest yield increase (↑ 45.3%). Consumers are advised to eat cucumbers with the peel, as this study found higher levels of antioxidant compounds in the peel compared to the flesh. 

Optimizing Greenhouse Cucumber Fertigation Through Grafting: Improving Yield, Bioactive Compounds, and Antioxidant Activity

Oresitrophe is monotypic, with the only species, Oresitrophe rupifraga Bunge, which is exclusive to China, having special growth and developmental traits due to its habitat. Furthermore, it has bright flowers and medicinal benefits. This study investigated the metabolites present in various tissues of Oresitrophe rupifraga Bunge. Using a widely targeted metabolomics approach, 1965 different metabolites were identified in Oresitrophe rupifraga Bunge. Based on principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA), the aboveground and underground metabolites of Oresitrophe rupifraga differed significantly. The comparison between bulblets and leaves revealed the differential expression of 461 metabolites, whereas the comparison between rhizomes and leaves showed the differential expression of 423 metabolites, and the comparison between bulblets and rhizomes showed the differential expression of 249 metabolites. The bulblets exhibited 49 metabolites that were higher and 412 metabolites that were lower than those of the leaves, whereas the rhizomes showed 123 upregulated and 300 downregulated metabolites. Bulblets showed an increase in 18 metabolites and a decrease in 231 metabolites compared to the rhizomes. Leaves contain more phenolic acids than the rhizomes and bulblets, whereas the rhizomes and bulblets contain more terpenoids than the leaves. KEGG pathway analysis showed an association between metabolites and metabolic pathways, as well as their effect on the progression and maturation of Oresitrophe rupifraga Bunge. The research findings can provide some insight into the growth and developmental traits of Oresitrophe rupifraga Bunge, thus providing a theoretical foundation for cultivating and utilising this plant. 

Metabolomics analysis reveals metabolite diversity of the rare cliff plant Oresitrophe rupifraga Bunge

Aiming to address the problem of soil environmental pollution caused by the large-scale use of plastic film in agricultural production in China, field experiments were carried out by applying degradable plastic film. Pumpkin was used as the research material to explore the effects of black common plastic film (CK), white degradation plastic film (WDF), black degradation plastic film (BDF), and black CO2-based degradable plastic film (C-DF) on soil physicochemical properties, root growth and yield, and soil quality. The results showed that the soil water content and temperature of the three degradable plastic films were lower than those of ordinary plastic films to different degrees; there was no significant difference in soil organic matter content among the treatments. The soil available potassium content of the C-DF treatment was lower than that of CK, and WDF and BDF had no significant effect. Compared with those in CK and WDF, soil total nitrogen and available nitrogen contents in the BDF and C-DF treatments were lower, and the difference between treatments reached a significant level. Compared with that of CK, the catalase activities of the three types of degradation membranes were significantly increased by 2.9%-6.8%, and the sucrase was significantly decreased by 33.3%-38.4%. Compared with that in CK, the soil cellulase activity in the BDF treatment was significantly increased by 63.8%, whereas WDF and C-DF had no significant effects. The three types of degradable film treatments could promote the growth of underground roots, and the growth vigor was obviously enhanced. The yield of pumpkin treated with BDF and C-DF was close to that of CK, and the yield of pumpkin treated with BDF was significantly lower than that of CK by 11.4%. The experimental results showed that the effects of the BDF and C-DF treatments on soil quality and yield were comparable to those of CK. According to the results, two types of black degradable plastic film can effectively replace ordinary plastic film in the high-temperature production season.

[Effects of Different Types of Plastic Film Mulching on Soil Quality, Root Growth, and Yield].

Hedysarum scoparium and Caragana korshinskii seedlings were used as the test materials to carry out the roots exposure stress model test. By comparing the physiological growth indexes in the leaves of the tested plants, the stress resistance ability was evaluated. The results showed (1) root exposure resulted in excessive oxygen free radicals, which resulted in membrane lipid peroxidation and increased MDA content in two plants. The increase of MDA content in H. scoparium was greater than that in C. korshinskii. (2) H. scoparium mainly regulate their own adaptation to the stress by regulating carotenoids. C. korshinskii adjusts itself to adapt to the stress by regulating chlorophyll. (3) H. scoparium resist this stress mainly by regulating their respiration rate. (4) H. scoparium mainly through the mobilization of proline, by adjusting the proline concentration to reduce their water potential; C. korshinskii reduced its water potential mainly by regulating the concentration of soluble sugar to adapt to the stress. (5) H. scoparium and C. korshinskii activated peroxidase (H. scoparium) and catalase (C. korshinskii) to clean up intracellular peroxides, respectively. To sum up, under the same root exposure ratio, there were significant differences in physiological regulation and morphological indexes between H. and C. korshinskii, but their stress resistance mechanisms were quite different.

Comparative analysis of physiological responses to environmental stress in Hedysarum scoparium and Caragana korshinskii seedlings due to roots exposure

Lilium davidii var. unicolor (Lanzhou lily) is rich in nutrients, making it an important economic plant widely used in the fields of food and medicine. In this study, potted lily bulbs were treated with nutrient solutions containing K+ and nutrient solutions without K+ (CK and KT). The contents of nutrients in lily bulbs at different stages after treatment were compared. It was found that the application of potassium fertilizers increased the content of total phenols, flavonoids, and flavanols in lily bulbs and the antioxidant activity in the bulbs. Simultaneously, the study observed that potassium fertilizers could impact the accumulation of polysaccharides and saponins. Furthermore, employing non-targeted metabolomics, the secondary metabolites of mature Lanzhou lily bulbs were scrutinized both with and without potassium fertilization (KT and CK). A total of 607 metabolites were identified, including 573 in positive ion mode and 34 in negative ion mode. These metabolites were classified into 13 categories at the superclass level, with lipids and lipid molecules (37.93%), organic acids and their derivatives (16.52%), organic oxygen compounds (14.88%), and phenylpropanoids and polyketides (13.61%) being the most prominent. Differential metabolite enrichment analysis between the experimental and control groups showed that the differential metabolites were mainly concentrated in metabolic pathways related to amino acid biosynthesis, such as arginine and proline metabolism, beta-alanine metabolism, alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism. Additionally, it was found that the application of potassium fertilizer increased the accumulation of amino acids in Lanzhou lily bulbs. Overall, this study provides a theoretical reference for the development of nutrients and efficient cultivation techniques for L. davidii var. unicolor bulbs.
