This study evaluated the potential of an autumn LANDSAT MSS diazo-enhanced composite which consisted of one yellow copy of band4, three magenta copies of band 5 and one cyan copy of band 7, to map an area of small scattered forestlands. The standard colour composite of the same scene was also used for comparative purposes. The best diazo composite was made by high-contrast films. The diazo technique used is discussed briefly. Interpretation errors were characterized as commission errors and omission errors which were further classified by size and into errors of boundary placement and errors of identification. Furthermore, they were classified according to land-cover/use and stocking-level stand-size classification systems. In 1972, the International Geographical Union's Commission on World Land Use Survey adopted a project for a land-use map of Europe. Such a map, under the name Eulusmap was started earlier under sponsorship of several government offices in Hungary. Although there was great response from a number of contributors in many countries, it became evident by mid-1974 that the map would contain gaps and some inaccuracies unless additional data sources were utilized. By then, the satellite Landsat-1 had obtained imagery of most of Europe. Using theme extraction techniques, the map was completed in draft form and portions of it displayed at the 23d International Geographical Congress in Moscow during July 1976. Printing of the completed map was accomplished in May 1978.

The use of data derived from LANDSAT is facilitated when special products or computer enhanced images can be analyzed. However, the facilities required to produce and analyze such products prevent many users from taking full advantages of the LANDSAT data. A simple, low-cost method is presented by which users can make their own specially enhanced composite images from the four band black and white LANDSAT images by using the diazo process. The diazo process is described and a detailed procedure for making various color composites, such as color infrared, false natural color, and false color, is provided. The advantages and limitations of the diazo process are discussed. A brief discussion interpretation of diazo composites for land use mapping with some typical examples is included.
