Revealing internal flow behaviour in arc welding and additive manufacturing of metals
Lee Aucott,Hongbiao Dong,Wajira Mirihanage,Robert Atwood,Anton Kidess,Anton Kidess,Shian Gao,Wen Shuwen,John Marsden,Shuo Feng,Mingming Tong,Mingming Tong,Thomas Connolley,Michael Drakopoulos,Chris R. Kleijn,Ian Richardson,David J. Browne,Ragnvald H. Mathiesen,Helen V. Atkinson,Helen V. Atkinson +19 more
TL;DR: Direct time-resolved imaging of melt pool flow dynamics from a high-energy synchrotron radiation experiment is presented to show surface tension affects flow speed, orientation and surface turbulence.
Initiation and growth kinetics of solidification cracking during welding of steel.
Lee Aucott,D. Huang,Hongbiao Dong,Wen Shuwen,Wen Shuwen,Ja A. Marsden,Alexander Rack,A. C. F. Cocks +7 more
TL;DR: To elucidate the failure mechanisms, solidification cracking during arc welding of steel are investigated in situ with high-speed, high-energy synchrotron X-ray radiography with results that show the growth of micro-cavities is driven by increasing strain induced to the solidifying steel.
A Three-Stage Mechanistic Model for Solidification Cracking During Welding of Steel
TL;DR: In this paper, a three-stage mechanistic model for solidification cracking during TIG welding of steel is proposed from in situ synchrotron X-ray imaging of solidification cracks and subsequent analysis of fracture surfaces.
Multiscale, Multiphysics Numerical Modeling of Fusion Welding with Experimental Characterization and Validation
Mingming Tong,Gregory Duggan,Jun Liu,Yu Xie,M.F. Dodge,Lee Aucott,Hongbiao Dong,Ruslan L. Davidchack,Jon Dantzig,Jon Dantzig,Olga Barrera,Alan C.F. Cocks,Hiroto Kitaguchi,Sergio Lozano-Perez,Chuangxin Zhao,Ian Richardson,Anton Kidess,Chris R. Kleijn,Wen Shuwen,Roger Barnett,David J. Browne +20 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a multiscale and multiphysics numerical modeling approach for fusion welding is proposed, where numerical models are directly linked to neighboring spatial scales instead of trying to link all submodels directly together through all available spatial scales.

The role of Ti carbonitride precipitates on fusion zone strength-toughness in submerged arc welded linepipe joints
TL;DR: The role of micro-alloying in the submerged arc welding (SAW) of high strength low alloy steel linepipe is paramount in facilitating the high strength properties of the linepipe as mentioned in this paper.
