This article looks at educators’ understanding of workplace bullying through the lens of a twodimensional model of bullying. Educators, who were furthering their studies at the University of the Free State, were invited to take part in a study on different types of bullying. Deductive, directed content analysis was used to analyse 59 participants’ descriptions of workplace bullying. The study found that the theoretical model provided a valuable framework for studying bullying in this context. The analysis of the educators’ descriptions provided the following insights about the relational and organisational foundations of workplace bullying: (1) The relational powerless victims are subjected to public humiliation, disregard, isolation and discrimination. The bullying of educators results in escalating apathy and disempowerment, to the detriment of their professional and private wellbeing. (2) Bullying is likely to occur in schools where organisational chaos reigns. Such schools are characterised by incompetent, unprincipled, abusive leadership, lack of accountability, fairness and transparency. (3) There is interplay between relational powerlessness and organisational chaos, i.e. the absence of principled leadership, accountability and transparency gives rise to workplace bullying.

Educators' understanding of workplace bullying

Research on workplace bullying (WPB) in occupations, identified teaching as a high risk job. Yet there is a dearth of research on WPB among teachers. The aim of this study is to contribute to the limited body of knowledge on the prevalence of WPB within an international and South African schooling context. This article reports on results from an exploratory study on South African teachers’ exposure to WPB. Self-reporting questionnaires were completed by a convenient, voluntary sample of teachers (n=999). The respondents had to indicate their exposure to 43 pre-defined acts of WPB clustered into four categories. This study exposes the commonness of WPB among participating teachers: 90.8% of them were victims of WPB during the 12 months that preceded the study, and 89.1% of the victims had been exposed to at least two different categories of WPB. The perpetrators tried especially to undermine the victims’ professional status and isolate them. The study identified the constant evaluation of victims’ performance as the most common of the 43 negative acts. The results are discussed with reference to other studies. It is concluded that WPB is a serious problem in South African schools and needs to be addressed on policy and institutional levels.

South African teachers’ exposure to workplace bullying

Bullying is the threatening factor in hospital environment for nurses health and wellbeing. Current research was administered with the aim of studying the relationship between bullying in hospital with psychological and spiritual well being among nurses. Research method was correlation and statistical population was the nurses of Yazd hospitals, among them 299 persons were selected using accessible sampling method.¬ Data gathering instruments were the future made questionnaires which reliability and validity of them verified, including bullying questionnaire, psychological well being questionnaire and spiritual questionnaire. Results revealed that there is significant relationship between bullying (contempt and despising, angry and revengefulness, neglect, verbal persecution, threatening and unconventional work stress) with psychological well being and spiritual well being (personal, communal, environmental and transcendental). Also the results of regression analysis revealed that verbal persecution and unconventional work stress have significant predictive power for prediction of psychological well being, unconventional work stress have significant predictive power for prediction of personal spiritual well being and threatening have significant predictive power for prediction of environmental spiritual well being. The results of current research showed that bullying of co-workers and supervisors at hospital setting could expose the nurses psychological well being and relatively their spiritual well being with problem.
