ABSTRACT Principles and applications of organizational behavior management (OBM) can be incorporated within human services settings to promote applied research that contributes to client outcomes, employee performance, systems development, and other value-added benefits. We describe organizational strategies for building a program of research and dissemination focused on (a) leadership direction and support, (b) assessment of barriers (competing contingencies) to research, (c) integration of research with routine service delivery, (d) formation of research teams, (e) oversight by a research review committee, (f) research training, supervision, and mentorship, (g) incentivizing research participation among employees, and (h) organizational research ethics. Steps and recommendations for implementing these strategies are presented.

This chapter discusses behavioral approaches to staff training and performance management. The first section covers staff training procedures consisting of behavioral skills training, pyramidal training, and the use of video and technology in training. The section reviews the steps involved in best practices for staff training. The second section discusses performance management procedures designed to maintain the correct use of job skills by staff. After a brief review of antecedent and consequent approaches to managing staff performance, the second section discusses resources available to supervisors and managers to assess, promote, and maintain staff performance of their staff. The chapter includes a table listing resources available to organizations seeking to improve staff training and management.

This study evaluated the effects of a supervisory intervention on maintenance of appearance and organization in classrooms at a human services program for children and youths. The intervention combined performance feedback to classroom staff, public posting of performance outcomes, and eligibility for a performance-based incentive. Conducted in a multiple-baseline design, intervention was immediately and consistently effective in all classrooms. These findings support organizational behavior management applications within human services programs to improve performance that is related to environmental care.
