Experiments were conducted to measure the ac breakdown strength of epoxy alumina nanocomposites with different filler loadings of 0.1, 1 and 5 wt%. The experiments were performed as per the ASTM D 149 standard on samples of thickness 0.5 mm, 1 mm and 3 mm in order to study the effect of thickness on the ac breakdown strength of epoxy nanocomposites. In the case of epoxy alumina nanocomposites it was observed that the ac breakdown strength was marginally lower for 0.1 wt% and 1 wt% filler loadings and then increased at 5 wt% filler loading as compared to the unfilled epoxy. The Weibull shape parameter (β) increased with the addition of nanoparticles to epoxy as well as with the increasing sample thickness for all the filler loadings considered. DSC analysis was done to study the material properties at the filler resin interface in order to understand the effect of the filler loading and thereby the influence of the interface on the ac breakdown strength of epoxy nanocomposites. It was also observed that the decrease in ac electric breakdown strength with an increase in sample thickness follows an inverse power-law dependence. In addition, the ac breakdown strength of epoxy silica nanocomposites have also been studied in order to understand the influence of the filler type on the breakdown strength.

AC breakdown characteristics of epoxy nanocomposites

Polypropylene (PP), with high breakdown strength, low dissipation and good processibility, is one of the most widely used dielectric material for power equipment, especially in power capacitors and power cables. The improvement of PP-based dielectric material can benefit the properties enhancement of power capacitors and cables, and thus to meet with the rapid development of the power system. Nanocomposite provided a promising orientation to reach the target and recent research approaches of PP nanocomposite for power equipment were reviewed in this paper. In this paper, we linked the nanofillers to the improved properties of PP nanocomposite, and categorised the research works into nanoclay/PP composites, metal oxide/PP nanocomposite, conductive particles/PP nanocomposite, and PP core-shell nanocomposites chronologically, corresponding to the enhanced thermal and mechanical property, breakdown strength property and energy storage property, respectively. Based on the achieved approaches, prospective for future research was proposed, providing a worth-considering direction for the future work.

Polypropylene nanocomposite for power equipment: a review

This work studies the direct current breakdown characteristics of unfilled epoxy and epoxy nonconductive nanocomposites (SiO2,MgO and Al2O3). It also examines the variation of electrical properties in epoxy nanocomposites. The novel aspect of this study is that the samples of Epoxy nanocomposite were exposed to high voltages of up to six kilo volts for three hours using field electron microscopy under high vacuum conditions (10−5 mbar). The current emitted from these samples was measured at three different intervals of time. In addition, the influence of high voltage on the permittivity, loss factor (tan(δ)), and conductivity of the epoxy nanocomposite was studied. This evaluation was conducted before and after applying the voltage at room temperature, The frequency range extends from 10−2–10−7 Hz using the Novo Control Alpha-A analyzer. Current–voltage characterization was performed through field electron microscopy. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The unfilled epoxy exhibited structural degradation, resulting in the formation of holes when exposed to high voltages of up to six kilo volts, leading to a reduction in electrical properties. Nevertheless, the addition of nanoparticles shows a significant increase in the operational lifetime of the epoxy nanocomposite. The degree of increase in the lifetime of epoxy composite varied depending on several factors such as the type of NPs introduced and their respective sizes. The epoxy/Al2O3 nanocomposite comparing with epoxy/MgO and epoxy/SiO2 nanocomposite showed elevated resistance to direct current breakdown strength and maintaining its dielectric.

Electrical Characterization of Epoxy Nanocomposite under High DC Voltage

Polymer nanocomposite has been attracting more attention as a new insulation material because homogeneous dispersion of nano-sized inorganic fillers can improve various properties significantly. In this paper, various kinds of epoxy-based nanocomposites were made, and the AC breakdown strengths of Nano filler and micro- filler mixtures of epoxy-based composites were analyzed using sphere-to-sphere electrodes. Moreover, nano- and microfiller combinations were investigated as an approach to practical application of nanocomposite insulation materials. Its composition ratio was 100 (resin):82 (hardener):1.5 (accelerator). AC breakdown tests were performed at room temperature (), , and in the vicinity of (). Thermal conductivity was measured using TC-30.

Improvement of Electrical and Thermal Characteristics of Nano-Micro Epoxy Composite

In this study, Pt/ZSM-22, Pt/Y, Pt/ZSM-22 + Y (the support is a mechanically blended mixture of ZSM-22 and Y at 1:1 weight ratio), and Pt/ZSM-22 – Y (the support is NaOH + CTAB-treated ZSM-22 + Y) with 0.5 wt % of Pt loading were synthesized and applied as catalysts in the hydroisomerization of n-dodecane. The microstructures and acidic properties of these catalysts were characterized by XRD, TEM, BET, N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, NH3-TPD, Py-IR, and 27Al-NMR. This study revealed significantly different acidic properties and catalytic performances between the mechanically mixed Pt/ZSM-22 + Y and post-treated Pt/ZSM-22 – Y. In particular, Pt/ZSM-22 – Y not only delivers a high n-dodecane conversion but also significantly enhances the yield and selectivity of multibranched iso-dodecane. This enhanced selectivity of multibranched iso-dodecane may be attributed to the high number of medium-strong acid sites and increased mesopores generated by the post-treatment process. 

Isomerization of n-Dodecane for High Selectivity of Multibranched Iso-dodecane over Pt/ZSM-22 – Y Catalyst

In this paper, AC breakdown (ACBD) properties of Nano-Ag/epoxy resin composites were studied. The result shows that the ACBD strength value has a peak with the increase of Ag particles. This phenomenon can be explained by basic dielectric theories and Coulomb blockade mechanism. The ACBD strength values of the composites can be described by a Weibull distribution, and he Weibull parameters have a certain relationship with the amount of Ag particles in the composite.
