Probabilistic linguistic term set (PLTS) has been proposed to tackle qualitative information efficiently in the decision-making process to achieve computing with expressions, which can be regarded as an advanced process of computing with words. The PLTS plays an important role in decision making by providing a comprehensive way for representing complex linguistic information. Owning to its usefulness and efficiency, the PLTS has attracted a lot of researchers’ attention, and fruitful research achievements regarding it has been published since it was introduced in 2016. As the probabilistic linguistic theory is still in its infancy, a survey of it contributes to understanding the previous topics and the current issues, and predicting the future research directions in this area. To implement these goals, this paper is organized by bibliometric analysis, definitions, multiple criteria decision-making methods, preference relations, and applications. Twelve future research directions related to the probabilistic linguistic decision-making theory are indicated. This paper provides some insights for researchers and practitioners who have interest in complex linguistic decision making.

A survey of decision-making methods with probabilistic linguistic information: bibliometrics, preliminaries, methodologies, applications and future directions

Evaluating the Internet-of-Things (IoT) platforms is a crucial step in the development and deployment process of IoT applications. It is still an open issue. In this article, evaluating the IoT platforms is formulated to be a multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) problem since it involves multiple considerations and a novel integrated MCDM method is put forward for handling this problem. To this end, an evaluation criteria system is established to characterize these considerations for evaluating IoT platforms, and then the concept of probabilistic linguistic term sets (PLTSs) is introduced to express the group preference information of IoT platforms with respect to the criteria. Then, a novel probabilistic linguistic best–worst (PLBW) method based on the score value is put forward for calculating and analyzing the importance degrees of criteria. Based on the PLBW method, two-tuple distance measure, and two-level possibility degree, a novel integrated probabilistic linguistic MCDM model based on the TODIM method is proposed to rank IoT platforms. Finally, a practical case is provided to show the procedure of evaluating IoT platforms and the comparative analysis is performed to verify the advantages of the probabilistic linguistic TODIM method.

Evaluating IoT Platforms Using Integrated Probabilistic Linguistic MCDM Method

The edge node selection problem in edge computing is a typical multi-criteria group decision-making problem. In this paper, we put forward an ELECTRE II method with the probabilistic linguistic information to handle the edge node selection problem. First, a novel distance measure is developed for probabilistic linguistic term sets (PLTSs) and an entropy measure is devised to measure the uncertainty degree of PLTSs. Based on the score value and entropy, a novel method is put forward to compare two PLTSs. Next, a weight-determining method for criteria based on multiple correlation coefficient and a weight-determining method for experts based on entropy theory are proposed. After that, a novel probabilistic linguistic ELECTRE II method is put forward to deal with the edge node selection problem. Comparison with previous methods is provided to verify the superiority of our method.

The probabilistic linguistic term sets (PLTSs) are powerful to deal with the hesitant linguistic situation in which each provided linguistic term has a probability. The PLTSs contain uncertainties caused by the linguistic terms and their probability information. In order to measure such uncertainties, three entropy measures are proposed: the fuzzy entropy, the hesitant entropy, and the total entropy. The fuzzy entropy measures the fuzziness of the PLTSs, and the hesitant entropy measures the hesitation of the PLTSs. To facilitate the computation of all uncertainties contained in the PLTSs, the total entropy is proposed. Some properties and some formulas of the entropy measures are introduced. A multi-criteria decision making model based on the PLTSs is introduced by using the proposed entropy measures. An illustrative example is provided and the comparison analysis with the existing method is given.

The hesitant fuzzy linguistic preference relations (HFLPRs) facilitate decision makers to express hesitant assessments in fuzzy decision making problems. It is important for the use of consistent HFLPRs since inconsistency leads to unreliable decision making results. This paper aims at proposing the additive and multiplicative consistency improvement processes for HFLPRs such that they reach an acceptable level. Some properties of the additive and multiplicative consistency of HFLPRs are investigated, based on which two algorithms for improving the additive consistency and multiplicative consistency are introduced. Two numerical examples are analyzed by using the algorithms and the comparative analysis between the proposed model and other models is also given. A multi-criteria decision making model based on HFLPRs is proposed, and a practical example on performance evaluation of commercial banks is presented to show the feasibility of the proposed model.

Improving the additive and multiplicative consistency of hesitant fuzzy linguistic preference relations

. Multidistance is an extension of conventional distance and is used to measure distance for more than two points. It has been applied to some practical problems since its appearance. In order to enrich the family of multidistances and facilitate further applications of multidistances, a new multidistance based on the generalized OWA (GOWA) operator is introduced in this paper. Some of its properties, including regularity, stability, strong multidistance, super-additivity, homogeneity, are investigated. A power average operator is then proposed, whose support function is calculated by using the proposed GOWA-based multidistance. A numerical example is then presented to show the performance of this operator.
