Wireless video sensor networks (WVSNs) have been envisioned for a wide range of important applications, including battlefield intelligence, security monitoring, emergency response, and environmental tracking. Compared to traditional communication system, the WVSN operates under a set of unique resource constraints, including limitations with respect to energy supply, on-board computational capability, and transmission bandwidth. The objective of this paper is to study the resource utilization behavior of a wireless video sensor and analyze its performance under the resource constraints. More specifically, we develop an analytic power-rate-distortion (P-R-D) model to characterize the inherent relationship between the power consumption of a video encoder and its rate-distortion performance. Based on the P-R-D analysis and a simplified model for wireless transmission power, we study the optimum power allocation between video encoding and wireless transmission and introduce a measure called achievable minimum distortion to quantify the distortion under a total power constraint. We consider two scenarios in wireless video sensing, small-delay wireless video monitoring and large-delay wireless video surveillance, and analyze the performance limit of the wireless video sensor in each scenario. The analysis and results obtained in this paper provide an important guideline for practical wireless video sensor design.

Resource Allocation and Performance Analysis of Wireless Video Sensors

In this paper, we propose a novel pilot aided joint estimation technique for carrier frequency offset (CFO) and doubly selective (both time and frequency selective) channel (DSC) in high-mobility multiple-input–multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (MIMO-OFDMA) uplink systems. As the maximum-likelihood (ML) solution to this estimation problem is highly computationally tedious due to the requirement of multidimensional optimization, we propose an iterative scheme based on the oblique projection (OP), which separates the user signal in each iteration, resulting in decomposition of highly complex multidimensional search to many 1-D searches. We also derive a low-complexity approximation to the proposed technique, which makes use of precalculated projection matrices stored at the base station. The exact Cramer–Rao bound (CRB) of the joint estimation of CFOs and DSCs in MIMO-OFDMA uplink is also derived. Simulation studies indicate that the mean square error performance of the proposed techniques nearly achieves the CRB even at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs).

Iterative Joint Carrier Frequency Offset and Doubly Selective Channel Estimation in High-Mobility MIMO-OFDMA Uplink Using Oblique Projection

Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is the network architecture where nodes (e.g. APs, mesh routers) can communicate with one another via multi-hop routing or forwarding. This is possible because of its dynamic selforganization, self-configuration and self-correction characteristics, which enable flexible integration, quick deployment, easy maintenance, low-cost, reliable services and its capability for capacity enhancement, connectivity and throughput. Although the current standard defines Multicast as well as QoS as important issues for considerations on this type of network, how to merge these two, especially at the Network layer, has been left to the discretion of different service providers. This paper describes a framework for the QoS Multicast routing provisioning problems in the Next-Generation IEEE 802.11s. We assume a working QoS MAC layer protocol and propose a framework for ensuring QoS Multicasting at the Network layer.

A Proposed QoS Multicast Routing Framework for Next-Generation Wireless Mesh Network

The success and efficiency of managing an emergency situation (such as rescue operation, fire fighting etc.) depends on enabling a system that would ensure the timely availability of high-quality and latest information to the emergency Mobile Units (MU). The system must ensure the provisioning of relevant information in a secure manner irrespective of the location and/or mobility of the MU. The enabling of secure and ubiquitous communication services, while the MUs are on the move, becomes more of a challenge in heterogeneous network environments due to the fact that the present public cellular network infrastructure does not support IP based mobility management functions (MIPv6, mSCTP etc.) and moreover, the interoperability between different access technologies is not well defined. In view of these restrictions, we present in this paper a novel client-based secure handoff management solution that is self-sufficient, does not require and/or rely on any changes on part of the underlying network infrastructure and enables the use of standard web browsers as well. We will present the operational details of our proposed approach and also analyze its performance based on the real implementation over the public network infrastructure. The performance will also be analyzed with respect to the influence of security mechanism such as authentication and encryption on the performance of the vertical handover process and compare the results with the standard mobility solutions such as MIPv6/NEMO and mSCTP based on experimental test beds.
