Systems and methods for imaging tissue of a patient positioned in a supine position is disclosed. The system includes an imaging array comprising a flexible mounting element, wherein the flexible mounting element includes at least a first articulating member configured to flex into position responsive to pressure and hold a flexed position upon release of pressure. In another example, the imaging array includes a curved portion, sized and dimensioned for positioning adjacent to a naturally positioned breast in response to articulation of the at least one articulating member of the flexible mounting element. In another example, the imaging array includes an RF coil array disposed on the flexible mounting element.

Apparatus for determining magnetic properties of materials comprises a portable probe (1), an equipment trolley (2) holding cryogenics and electronics and connecting cables (3). The probe (1) comprises a drive coil (4) and a correction coil (5), the drive coil (4) being disposed symmetrically with respect to an inner second-order gradiometer sensor coil (8). Electrical connectors in the form of 2-metre long Belden (1192A) microphone cables (3) are used to connect the apparatus on the equipment trolley (2) to the drive coil (4), the correction coil (5) and the sensor coil (8). The drive coil (4) is driven so as to generate a sinusoidally varying magnetic field. The electronics comprise a flux-locked loop (9), a SQUID controller (10), a data acquisition module (11) , which captures and processes the signals and a computer (12). A liquid-nitrogen dewar (13) is supported on the equipment trolley (2) and houses a sensitive SQUID detector (14) and a transfer coil (15) made from copper. Possible applications of the apparatus include an intra-operative tool for sentinel lymph node detection in the treatment of breast cancer, and a non-destructive evaluation tool for detecting voids and defects in aluminium and applications in the aeronautics industry.

A system and method for locating magnetic material. In one embodiment the system includes a magnetic probe (109); a power module (104) in electrical communication with the magnetic probe(100) to supply current to the magnetic probe; a sense module (108) in electrical communication with the magnetic probe to receive signals from the magnetic probe; and a processing module (computer) in electrical communication with the power module and the sense module. The processing module (computer) generates a waveform that controls the supply of current from the power module and receives a signal from the sense module that indicates the presence of magnetic material. The magnetic probe is constructed from a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion of substantially 10-6/°C or less and a Young's modulus of substantially 50 GPa or greater. In one embodiment magnetic nanoparticles collect in the lymph nodes. In one embodiment the particles have a mean hydrodynamic diameter of between 5-200 nm.

A method of generating a magnetic resonance (MR) image includes applying a localized magnetic field to a portion of a patient, determining a difference between a local field strength around a first region of interest and a local field strength around a different second region of interest, adjusting the local field strength around the first region of interest such that the local field strength around the first region of interest is substantially the same as the local field strength around the second region of interest, and generating an image of the first and second regions after adjusting the local field strength around the first second region of interest. A coil apparatus and a system are also described herein.

Method and apparatus for imaging a patient using local shim coils

A RF coil array is provided for imaging a chest wall of a patient including a breast. The RF coil array includes a rigid cup-shaped element and a flexible, substantially flat portion. The rigid cup-shaped element is sized and dimensioned to receive a small breast, such as a post mastectomy breast or a male breast, and the flexible portion is configured to be conformed to the patient adjacent the breast to allow for imaging of the breast, and adjacent areas while facing the chest wall.

The present invention provides a fat saturation device to be used in conjunction with a magnetice resonance imaging (MRI) breast coil, which provides padding for the comfort of the patient being imaged while eliminating the skin-air interface, thereby reducing the level of artefacts in the image. The device comprises a coil surface pad that contacts the surface of the coil, the pad having apertures therein through which the patients breasts extend when the patient is positioned on the coil for imaging. Aperture sleeves that are removable or retractable extend from the bottom surface of the coil surface into the apertures of the breast coil. The device comprises a fat saturation material.
