
 Lithium-ion batteries can last many years but sometimes exhibit rapid, nonlinear degradation that severely limits battery lifetime. Here, we review prior work on “knees” in lithium-ion battery aging trajectories. We first review definitions for knees and three classes of “internal state trajectories” (termed snowball, hidden, and threshold trajectories) that can cause a knee. We then discuss six knee “pathways”, including lithium plating, electrode saturation, resistance growth, electrolyte and additive depletion, percolation-limited connectivity, and mechanical deformation, some of which have internal state trajectories with signals that are electrochemically undetectable. We also identify key design and usage sensitivities for knees. Finally, we discuss challenges and opportunities for knee modeling and prediction. Our findings illustrate the complexity and subtlety of lithium-ion battery degradation and can aid both academic and industrial efforts to improve battery lifetime.

Given that the non‐aqueous electrolyte in Li‐ion battery plays a specific role as an ion‐transport medium and interfacial modifier for both cathode and anode, understanding and evaluating the evolution and degradation of electrolytes throughout the life cycle is a fundamental concern within the lithium‐ion battery (LIB) community. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the electrolyte decomposition processes, mechanisms, effects of electrolyte degradation on the battery performance, characterization techniques, and modeling analysis. First, it thoroughly discusses the processes and mechanisms involved in electrolyte degradation from two primary perspectives: 1) the formation of the electrode‐electrolyte interphase and 2) the decomposition of the bulk electrolyte. Subsequently, it systematically outlines the effects of electrolyte degradation on the battery performance. The article further introduces cutting‐edge characterization and detection techniques used to assess electrolyte degradation, with a specific emphasis on quantitative methods for analyzing residual electrolytes in practical cells. Moreover, it summarizes advanced physical models of electrolyte decomposition. Finally, the paper concludes by offering insights into future trends and potential challenges in battery degradation research, it offers valuable references and guidance for further exploration of electrolyte degradation in LIBs.

Electrolyte Degradation During Aging Process of Lithium‐Ion Batteries: Mechanisms, Characterization, and Quantitative Analysis

Electric vehicles (EVs) in severe cold regions face the real demand for fast charging under low temperatures, but low-temperature environments with high C-rate fast charging can lead to severe lithium plating of the anode material, resulting in rapid degradation of the lithium-ion battery (LIB). In this paper, by constructing an electrode–thermal model coupling solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) growth and lithium plating, the competition among different factors of capacity degradation under various ambient temperatures and C-rates are systematically analyzed. In addition, the most important cause of rapid degradation of LIBs under low temperatures are investigated, which reveal the change pattern of lithium plating with temperature and C-rate. The threshold value and kinetic law of lithium plating are determined, and a method of lithium-free control under high C-rate is proposed. Finally, by studying the average aging rate of LIBs, the reasons for the abnormal attenuation of cycle life at lower C-rates are ascertained. Through the chromaticity diagram of the expected life of LIBs under various conditions, the optimal fast strategy is explored, and its practical application in EVs is also discussed. This study can provide a useful reference for the development of high-performance and high-safety battery management systems to achieve fine management.
