Four new sodium uranyl borates, α-Na[(UO2)2B10O15(OH)5)] (NaUBO-1), β-Na[(UO2)2B10O15(OH)5] (NaUBO-2), Na[(UO2)2B10O15(OH)5]·3H2O (NaUBO-3), and Na[(UO2)B6O10(OH)]·2H2O (NaUBO-4), and four new thallium uranyl borates, α-Tl2[(UO2)2B11O18(OH)3] (TlUBO-1), β-Tl2[(UO2)2B11O18(OH)3] (TlUBO-2), Tl[(UO2)2B10O16(OH)3] (TlUBO-3), and Tl2[(UO2)2B11O19(OH)] (TlUBO-4), have been prepared via the reaction of sodium nitrate or thallium nitrate, uranyl nitrate, and excess boric acid at 190 °C. These compounds share a common structural motif consisting of a linear uranyl, UO22+, cation surrounded by BO3 triangles and BO4 tetrahedra to create a UO8 hexagonal bipyramidal environment around uranium. The borate anions bridge between uranyl units to create sheets. Additional BO3 triangles extend from the polyborate layers and are directed approximately perpendicular to the sheets. Polarity and Chirality in Uranyl Borates: Insights into Understanding the Vitrification of Nuclear Waste and the Development of Nonlinear Optical Materials

A series of open-framework aluminoborates (ABOs) [M(dien)2][AlB6O11(OH)] (M=Co (I a), Ni (I b), Cd (I c), Zn (I d); dien=diethylenetriamine) and [M(en)3][AlB7O12(OH)2]⋅ (H2O)0.25 (M=Co (II a), Ni (II b); en=ethylenediamine) have been made under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and nonlinear optical determination. These compounds were classified as two structural types: Type I (I a–d) contains AlO4 tetrahedra and B6O11(OH) clusters, which link to form a new 3D framework with 7-/9-ring helical channels and large 13-ring channels; whereas type II (II a,b) is composed of AlO4 tetrahedra, chainlike B4O6(OH)2 tetramer, and crablike B6O12 clusters, which interconnect to form other new 3D frameworks with 8-ring helical channels, rare 16-ring double-helical channels, and larger odd 15-ring channels. These compounds represent the first examples of 3D ABOs templated by transition-metal complexes (TMCs). I c,d present good second harmonic generation (SHG) properties. UV/Vis spectral investigation indicates that I a–d and II a,b are wide-band-gap semiconductors.

A Series of Open‐Framework Aluminoborates Templated by Transition‐Metal Complexes

A new layered aluminoborate [Zn(dien)2][{Al(OH)}{B5O9F}] (1, en = diethylenetriamine) with an acentric structure has been yielded under solvothermal conditions. In 1, the AlO3(OH) tetrahedra and B5O9F clusters interconnect to form a layer of [{Al(OH)}{B5O9F}]2− with 7-MR helical channels. 1 exhibits weak SHG properties and luminescence emission at 450 nm.

Purposely prepared magnetic nanocomposite beads were investigated as catalysts for the degradation of Novacron blue (NB) dye (a reactive azo dye widely used in textile industries) by Fenton and photo-Fenton processes. Specifically, magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and natural iron ore (NIO) were incorporated into sodium calcium alginate material to form Fe3O4-NIO calcium alginate beads using an inexpensive protocol. While Fe3O4/calcium alginate beads might be a good catalyst for Fenton and photo-Fenton processes, adding NIO could be beneficial to enhance the stability of the magnetic beads. The as-prepared catalyst was characterized by several techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) and Barret-Joyner-Halender (BJH), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and UV–vis diffuse reflectance analyses. Such characterizations showed that the (photo)catalyst was successfully synthesized, as well as its porous nature with a specific surface area of 26 m2/g. Magnetic nanocomposite alginate beads showed adsorptive properties by removing 22 % of NB dye under optimum conditions (pH 2, [NB]0 = 40 mg/L, and 0.2 g dose of beads). This magnetic catalyst proved a great photocatalytic behavior according to its optical properties and contributed as a photo-Fenton catalyst to the degradation of 80 % of NB dye after 120 min treatment compared to only 50 % after 120 min of Fenton process. This cheap, eco-friendly, non-toxic, magnetically separable and stable catalyst was reused for six subsequent photo-Fenton tests. All these advantages show its potential to be used as heterogeneous catalyst in wastewater treatment applications making it worthy of further investigation under more realistic conditions.
