Recent progress in communication and database technologies has drastically changed user data processing capabilities The present situation is characterised by a growing number of applications that require the ability to access and manipulate data from various pre-existing database sources A possible solution to deal with multiple databases is to logically integrate the component databases by the provision of one or more tailored global schemas The end-user therefore is presented with a homogeneous and consistent view of the (possibly heterogeneous) multidatabase Schema integration is an involved process that requires the supervised detection of similarities and dissimilarities between the component schemas, reconciling the dissimilarities once detected and providing a homogeneous view to the end-user We are currently investigating the schema integration problem in object-oriented multidatabase systems This paper describes one aspect of our work, namely, the classification and reuse of the knowledge accruing from the schema integration process Such knowledge is classified into the knowledge that accrues from detecting and reconciling semantic heterogeneity between local schemas and the knowledge that accrues from generating the global schemas We argue that reuse in schema integration is a vital issue and proves most valuable in saving the integrator's effort, simplifying the generation of new global schemas and supporting global schema evolution

Measuring Risk Using Existing Frameworks

This paper presents the nuts and bolts of how a senior level computer science networking course is being successfully taught to students without requiring them to have any prior experience in networking. Because of the nature of indigenous industry, a pure theoretical approach to learning networking is inadequate to prepare the students for the job market. Just as lab work supports other computer science courses, the networking course requires the students to complete rigorous lab sessions leading to thorough understanding of the seven layers of ISO OSI model. Throughout the lab assignments, which include several network installations, the students are shown practically how the theoretical principles learned in class apply to networking in the real world. The lab assignments start with a simple examination of a network and its physical and logical topology. Students are exposed to the practical aspects of networking such as splicing cables, installing cable connectors, installing network interface boards, configuring drives, configuring a network in different topologies, selecting and configuring network hardware, and optimizing the overall network setup. After learning how to setup a network, students learn to install a network operating system, setup user accounts, provide access to different software packages, provide security, perform other administrative tasks, and troubleshoot the network at the hardware and software levels. Because of rigorous hands-on experience, students become extremely proficient in applied networking and obtain a deep understanding of the related theoretical aspects. This paper begins by presenting the need and feasibility for offering such a networking course using a novel approach. It then details the contents of practical lab sessions that introduce students to the theoretical principles of networking. Finally, it presents the spinoffs of the course, such as earning certification as a Certified NetWare Engineer or Certified NetWare Administrator.

A Do And Understand Approach To A Networking Course

ISD involves a variety of planning tasks, probably more so than other professions. The planning activity permutates throughout all stages of development, implementation, management and use. Given the key role that planning plays in ISD and use, this chapter examines whether the people involved in the development and use of IS are equipped to cope with the required planning tasks. To accomplish this, a survey is used to chart the planning profiles from a sample of the general population. The survey, conducted through the Mass-Observation Archive (MOA) at the University of Sussex, was not fully representative of the general population and contains age and gender biases. However, it does represent people from a wide selection of socio economic backgrounds and is likely to provide a good window into ‘every day contemporary life’. The survey responses give an indication of what people usually plan for, how people plan and how long in the future people plan for. Further examination enables two different future-views, those of ‘planners’ and ‘non-planners’, to be generated. These future-views are considered with the planning needs for ISD management and use. People involved in planning tasks are likely to make use of existing planning skills gained in ‘every day life’. As such managers need to be aware of planning profiles when allocation planning tasks and identifying training needs. Potential synergies and problems for effective ISD planning activities are discussed.
