Antennas on-chip are a particular type of radiating elements valued for their small footprint. They are most commonly integrated in circuit boards to electromagnetically interface free space, which is necessary for wireless communications. Antennas on-chip radiate and receive electromagnetic (EM) energy as any conventional antennas, but what distinguishes them is their miniaturized size. This means they can be integrated inside electronic devices. Although on-chip antennas have a limited range, they are suitable for cell phones, tablet computers, headsets, global positioning system (GPS) devices, and WiFi and WLAN routers. Typically, on-chip antennas are handicapped by narrow bandwidth (less than 10&#x0025;) and low radiation efficiency. This survey provides an overview of recent techniques and technologies investigated in the literature, to implement high performance on-chip antennas for millimeter-waves (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) integrated-circuit (IC) applications. The technologies discussed here include metamaterial (MTM), metasurface (MTS), and substrate integrated waveguides (SIW). The antenna designs described here are implemented on various substrate layers such as Silicon, Graphene, Polyimide, and GaAs to facilitate integration on ICs. Some of the antennas described here employ innovative excitation mechanisms, for example comprising open-circuited microstrip-line that is electromagnetically coupled to radiating elements through narrow dielectric slots. This excitation mechanism is shown to suppress surface wave propagation and reduce substrate loss. Other techniques described like SIW are shown to significantly attenuate surface waves and minimise loss. Radiation elements based on the MTM and MTS inspired technologies are shown to extend the effective aperture of the antenna without compromising the antenna&#x2019;s form factor. Moreover, the on-chip antennas designed using the above technologies exhibit significantly improved impedance match, bandwidth, gain and radiation efficiency compared to previously used technologies. These features make such antennas a prime candidate for mmWave and THz on-chip integration. This review provides a thorough reference source for specialist antenna designers.

RF MEMS Circuit Design for Wireless Communications

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology has the potential of replacing many of the radio frequency (RF) components used in to day's satellite communication systems. In many cases, such RF MEMS components would not only substantially reduce size, weight, and power consumption, but also promise superior performance when compared to that of current technologies. The benefits of MEMS technology be come more pronounced for switch matrices because there is a large number of switching elements and, therefore, any size and mass reduction would have large overall impact. Though there has been some controversy on the reliability and lifetime of RF MEMS switches, significant improvements have been made and RF switches with billions of switching cycles have been demonstrated. This article describes the potential applications of RF MEMS switch matrices in the satellite industry, where mass reduction and performance improvement is crucial.

RF MEMS Satellite Switch Matrices

This work aims to build inclusive vision of the Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Everything (IoE), Tactile Internet and 5G, leveraging on MEMS technology, with focus on Energy Harvesters (EH-MEMS) and Radio Frequency passives (RF-MEMS). The IoT is described, stressing the pervasivity of sensing/actuating functions. High-level performances 5G will have to score are reported. Unifying vision of the mentioned paradigms is then built. The IoT evolves into the IoE by overtaking the concept of thing. Further step to Tactile Internet requires significant reduction in latency, it being enabled by 5G. The discussion then moves closer to the hardware components level. Sets of specifications driven by IoT and 5G applications are derived. Concerning the former, the attention is concentrated on typical power requirements imposed by remote wireless sensing nodes. Regarding the latter, a set of reference specifications RF passives will have to meet in order to enable 5G is developed. Once quantitative targets are set, a brief state of the art of EH-MEMS and RF-MEMS solutions is developed, targeting the IoT and 5G, respectively. In both scenarios, it will be demonstrated that MEMS are able to address the requirements previously listed, concerning EH from various sources and RF passive components. In conclusion, the frame of reference depicted in this work outlines a relevant potential borne by EH-MEMS and RF-MEMS solutions within the unified scenario of IoT, IoE, Tactile Internet and 5G, making the forecast of future relentless growth of MEMS-based devices, more plausible and likely to take place.

The paper illustrates the activity carried out under an ESA contract for the development of a miniaturized RF-MEMS SPDT switch and switch matrix using micromachining technology on a silicon substrate for power applications. A manufacturing procedure, based on an eight masks process, has been set up. At present, a broadband single-pole-double-throw (SPDT) switch operating in the 0-30 GHz frequency range has been fabricated and measured. Isolation of about -40 dB and insertion loss better than -0.7 dB have been obtained.

RF-MEMS SPDT switch on silicon substrate for space applications

In this paper an efficient way of modelling an RF MEMS switch will be demonstrated. On the base of several fullwave numerical simulations of a switch, artificial neural networks (ANNs) are established to relate different input and output parameters of a switch. The good coincidence between the simulated data and the model is shown at the example of a capacitive shunt switch in coplanar technology. S-parameters of the switch or the resonant frequency are computed with high accuracy for different geometrical parameters, with the same data also the inverse problem of determining the required geometry for a given resonance is solved.
