We examined cardiovascular (CV) reactivity and hostility among 30 male undergraduates after either nonviolent (billiards) or 1 of 2 levels of violent videogame play. Violence varied among 2 versions of the game Mortal Kombat (MKl = less violent, MK2 = more violent)-all other factors (graphics, sound) were held equal. As expected, increased game violence elicited greater CV reactivity and higher scores on hostility measures. Subjects who played MK1 or MK2 had higher heart rate reactivity than those who played billiards. Subjects who played MK2 showed greater systolic blood pressure reactivity than those who played MKl or billiards. Finally, subjects who played MK2 scored higher on the hostility measures than those who played MKl, who in turn scored higher than those who played billiards. These results indicate that the level of videogame violence, not just violence per se, should be of concern to consumers.

Mortal Kombat (tm) : The effects of violent videogame play on males' hostility and cardiovascular responding

The study presents the results of a project in which a series of digital games were used for teaching Mathematics to first, fourth, and sixth-grade primary school students (ages 6–7, 8–9, and 11–12). Mathematics was selected as the teaching subject because of the difficulties students face in understanding basic math concepts. Although digital games are used quite extensively for educational purposes, they are scarcely used for teaching Mathematics. The games were developed by the classes' teachers using Microsoft's Kodu Game Lab. The learning outcomes were compared to two other groups of students. The first was taught using the model proposed by Driver and Oldham while the second was taught conventionally. Data was collected using questionnaires and evaluation sheets. A total of 201 students participated in the study coming from three schools in Athens, Greece. Results indicated that students in the games group outperformed, in most cases, students in the other groups. Students' views for the games were highly positive. The implications for software engineers and education administrators are also discussed.

The effect of competitive context in nonviolent video games on aggression: The mediating role of frustration and the moderating role of gender

Previous research on factors affecting video game player aggression has mainly reflected on the violent content of video games; in recent years, some researchers have focused on competitive factors in video games. However, little research has examined the sole impacts of competitive factors in video games without violent content on aggression, and the neurological processes of these effects are still unknown. The present study was the first to examine the electrophysiological characteristics of short-term competitive video game exposure and aggression. Thirty-five participants played a video game in either competitive or solo mode for 15 min, followed by an ERP experiment based on the oddball paradigm and the hot sauce paradigm to measure aggressive behavior. Results showed that playing competitive game mode was associated with faster judgment of aggressive words, larger P300 amplitudes, and selection of more chili powder than in solo mode. Mediation analysis further revealed that the P300 amplitude evoked by the aggressive words partially mediated the relationship between competitive game exposure and aggressive behavior. These findings support the general aggression model. However, this study has limitations, such as a single form of competitive game examined and single blindness, which need further improvement in future studies.

The effect of violent media on aggression has always been highly concerned by the public. The effect of violent video game has been studied by researchers for many years, while how the interaction (competition and cooperation) work during video game play is still little known. In present study, t he effect of non-violent video games on aggression was tested by experimental design . Participants were assigned to 6 groups to play a violent video game or a nonviolent video game, and he or she play ed competitively or cooperatively with another participant, or play ed the game alone. Competitive Reaction Time Task was used to test aggressive behavior. EAST task and SHS scale were used to test aggressive cognition and affect. The results indicated both violent content and competition can arouse aggressive cognition and aggressive behavior. Only violent content can arouse aggressive affec t . Cooperation has little effect on explicit and implicit aggression.

Effects of Violent and Non-violent Computer Video Games on Explicit and Implicit Aggression

While violent video games are of great concern to the public for their potential impact of inducing aggression, recent changes in the dynamics of gaming has rendered study of such phenomena quite challenging. The impact of interpersonal factors on players' aggression has not yet to be fully understood. The present experiment was designed to test explicit and implicit aggression caused by multiplayer interactive violent games. 56 male participants were randomly assigned to three groups four-player group, double-player group and solo-play group. Extrinsic Affective Simon Task EAST and words evaluation task WET were used to test implicit and explicit aggressive cognition respectively. Competitive Reaction Time Task CRT was for measuring explicit aggressive behavior. Results showed: 1 Participants with low-trait aggression were more aggressive in implicit aggressive cognition when playing in four-player group than in other two groups. 2 Explicit aggressive cognition was affected by both interactive modes and trait aggression without interaction. The solo-play group was more explicitly aggressive than the four-player group. High-trait aggression group was more aggressive than low-trait group. 3 Participants' aggressive behavior decreased as the number of players increased. Factors that affect violent video games' impact on players' aggression were discussed.
