In classical Laplacian image sharpening, all pixels are processed one by one, which leads to large amount of computation. Traditional Laplacian sharpening processed on CPU is considerably time-consuming especially for those large pictures. In this paper, we propose a parallel implementation of Laplacian sharpening based on Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA), which is a computing platform of Graphic Processing Units (GPU), and analyze the impact of picture size on performance and the relationship between the processing time of between data transfer time and parallel computing time. Further, according to different features of different memory, an improved scheme of our method is developed, which exploits shared memory in GPU instead of global memory and further increases the efficiency. Experimental results prove that two novel algorithms outperform traditional consequentially method based on OpenCV in the aspect of computing speed.

Investigation of biological cell–protein interactions using SPR sensor through laser scanning confocal imaging–surface plasmon resonance system

The highly sensitive and rapid detection and distinction of gram-negative bacteria are essential for the early diagnosis and accurate medical treatment of bacterial infection. In this work, we investigated a new selective and sensitive method of detecting gram-negative bacteria based on a small molecule modified sensor chip by a laser scanning confocal imaging-surface plasmon resonance (LSCI-SPR) system. The small molecule (polymyxin B) strongly interacted with bacteria cell membrane. SPR signals changed with SYTO 9 stained bacteria concentrations, and fluorescence images were recorded at the same time. Results showed that Escherichia coli were distinguished clearly with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.0 × 102 CFU/mL for Escherichia coli. Moreover, a good linear relationship was observed between bacteria concentrations and SPR signals from 1.0 × 102 CFU/mL to 1.0 × 106 CFU/mL with a linear coefficient R2 of 0.99146. All these results indicated that this small-molecule modified sensor can be used for quantitative detection of known gram-negative bacteria and qualitative distinction of unknown gram-negative bacteria within 10 min each sample in real-time.

High sensitivity gram-negative bacteria biosensor based on a small-molecule modified surface plasmon resonance chip studied using a laser scanning confocal imaging-surface plasmon resonance system

The spectral properties of trivalent erbium ions (Er3+) are systematically studied in a melt-quenched germanate glass (60 GeO2-20PbO-10BaO-10K2O-0.1Ag2O) containing silver (Ag) particles. Thermal treatment of the material leads to the precipitation of Ag particles as observed by transmission electron microscopy and confirmed by absorption spectrum for the obvious surface plasmon resonance peak of Ag particles. The fluorescence from Er3+ in the 10-min-annealed sample with Ag particles is found to be 4.2 times enhanced compared with the unannealed sample excited by 488-nm Ar+ laser. A comparison is made between a spectral study performed on the unannealed Er3+-doped sample and the one annealed for 20 min. The data of absorption cross section and Judd—Ofelt intensity parameters show the agreement between the two samples no matter whether there are Ag particles, indicating that the introduction of Ag particles by post-heat treatment has no effect on the crystal field environment of Er3+ ions. The fluorescence enhancement is attributed to the surface plasmon oscillations of Ag particles in germanate glass.

On the fluorescence enhancement mechanism of Er3+ in germanate glass containing silver particles

A laser scanning confocal imaging-surface plasmon resonance (LSCI-SPR) instrument integrated with a wavelength-dependent surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor and a laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) is built to detect the bonding process of human IgG and fluorescent-labeled affinity purified antibodies in real time. The shifts of resonant wavelength at different reaction time stages are obtained by SPR, corresponding well with the changes of the fluorescence intensity collected by using LSCM. The instrument shows the merits of the combination and complementation of the SPR and LSCM, with such advantages as quantificational analysis, high spatial resolution and real time monitor, which are of great importance for practical applications in biosensor and life science.
