Community engagement in engineering education: A systematic literature review

This paper discusses the implementation of a fully integrated academic/service learning program on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, a joint effort between the University of Washington (UW) and Alcorn State University (ASU). Students participate both in a service learning component and a formal academic curriculum oriented toward actively participating in rebuilding homes and understanding the Hurricane Katrina Story. This pilot program is a full load (12 quarter credits) program that places the UW students on the Gulf Coast for the entire quarter and the ASU students in service for one week of the semester. The two participating institutions share course materials and address the same objectives across a wide variety of preparations and major interests. Both UW and ASU students, in preliminary feedback, find that actively participating and interacting with Katrina- affected communities in Bay St. Louis and Waveland, Mississippi significantly enriches and improves the value of the academic coursework.

Service learning is a means of outreach, and civic engagement is rooted in the Wisconsin Idea and the belief that education's influence should expand beyond the classroom to influence people's lives. The Wisconsin Idea rested on the conviction that students and university-trained experts could apply themselves to the problems of modern society and make democracy work more effectively. Service learning is a high-impact strategy and connects the curriculum to communities through by solving problems within. Marginalized communities benefit from expertise, free labor, resource allocation, and research support to promote inclusion, equity, and social justice. This chapter examines service learning in multiple social and professional degree programs. These projects include projects, embedded within various courses, semester-long service-learning classes, as well as a team projects. In addition to examining their programs' experiences, the authors present lessons learned and make recommendations about effective practices in managing these projects.

This paper presents the experience of service learning in the engineering design curriculum through recovery effort projects after Hurricane Katrina. A brief context for Rowan's Engineering Clinics and the mechanics and logistics of defining and executing such a project will be discussed. This type of project offers far more than technical aspects of design and fabrication; engineering management, writing, public speaking, and ethics are additional parts of the puzzle and contribute to making this a valuable experience. A range of pros, cons, and recommendations are presented as well as a new model engaging other disciplines on our campus in this endeavor. We hope that our experiences will encourage others to include this type of project as one component of the engineering curricula and service learning opportunities provided for students.
