Changing precipitation patterns caused by climate change are expected to have major impacts on food security and nutrition in agrarian areas in developing countries. However, the linkages between the duration and severity of precipitation shocks and their effects on child nutrition and household food security metrics remain underexplored. In this study, we used Feed the Future datasets from Ghana and Bangladesh to examine the impact of precipitation extremes on nutrition, measured by children’s height-for-age and weight-for-height Z-scores, and food security, measured by the Household Hunger Scale. We used a spatial error regression to control for the effects of spatial autocorrelation, and we found an association between precipitation shocks and household hunger in both Ghana and Bangladesh, as well as an association between higher rainfall and worse child nutrition in Ghana.

Hunger, nutrition, and precipitation: evidence from Ghana and Bangladesh

Introduction : The prevalence of stunting in children under two years old is high in developing country. Stunting in the early of life has many negative health consequences in later life, while the positive view is stunting could be prevent earlier by detecting a predisposing factors in intrauterine and extrauterine periode. Anthropometry of intrauterine predisposing factors (IntraPF) and Extrauterine predisposing factors (ExtraPF) could detect growth retardation. These study aim was to prove that there were significant different of IntraPF and ExtraPF between stunting and non stunting children aged 6-24 months. Methods: This comparative cross sectional study was nested to (Bogor longitudinal study on child growth and development (BLSCGD) held by National Health Research and Development (NHRD), Health Ministry of Indonesia. Subjects who defined as stunting if their height for age was more than two standard deviations below the WHO Child Growth standards median. There were 38 stunting and 46 non-stunting aged 6-24 months who met the study criteria. Independent variable was (1)IntraPF follow as maternal height, weight and length of neonatal, (2)ExtraPF: weight gain and body length gain at first six months of neonatal. Primary and secondary data collection was carried out from July 2017 to Februari 2018, held at the BLSCGD. All of body measurement using WHO standard.  Appropriate statistical analysis was used to compare the stunting and non-stunting groups with a significance limit of p <0.05. Results: Statistical analysis tests showed that: significantly different and lower IntraPF in the stunting group was maternal height, birth weight and length of the subjects compare to non-stunting and there were significant different and lower of ExtraPF follow as weight gain in the first six months, average weight gain per month in the first six months, increase in body length in the first six months, average increase in body length every month in the first six monthssignificantly lower in stunting children compare to non stunting children. Conclusion: The antropometric of intrauterine, extrauterine predisposing factors have been showed to have an impact on the child's height. It is important to monitor the anthropometry of the mother before pregnancy and provide nutritional interventions in the first 1000 days

Comparing The Anthropometric Measurements of Intra-Extra Uterine Period between Stunting and Non-stunting Children Aged 6-24 Months Old in Bogor Tengah Subdistrict, Bogor City, West Java

Background. Stunting is a major health problem in developing countries. Animal-based supplements can increase the height of children with stunting. This study was aimed at determining the effect of eel biscuit supplementation on increase in the height of children with stunting aged 36–60 months. Methods. A pilot study with pretest-post-test design. The study was conducted in two villages in the Priangan Region, West Java Province, Indonesia. The participants were divided into two groups: intervention group (10 supplemented eel biscuit pieces) and control group (biscuits from the government’s biscuit programme). A total of 56 children aged 36–60 months with the height-for-age z-score of <−2 SD were recruited voluntarily for sampling. Results. The initial height-for-age z-score of the intervention group was −3.45 SD and that of the control group was −3.11 SD. After 3 months of supplemented eel biscuit consumption, the height-for-age z-score of the intervention group changed to −2.52 SD and that of the control group changed to −2.51 SD. The average shift of the height-for-age z-score after 3 months of supplemented eel biscuit consumption was 0.93 SD in the intervention group and 0.6 SD in the control group. There were significant differences in delta and percent increase in the height-for-age z-score between both groups. Conclusions. Consumption of supplemented eel biscuits for 3 months increased the height-for-age z-score of children with stunting aged 36–60 months by 0.93 SD.

Effect of Eel Biscuit Supplementation on Height of Children with Stunting Aged 36-60 Months: A Pilot Study.

Background: Stunting and Wasting are effects of undernutrition in early childhood and their prevalence among rural under-5 children is an issue of special concern, especially in a district like Wardha which is known for repeated droughts and the notable number of farmer’s suicides. Children with wasting and stunting reflect poor health outcomes in future. Developmental impairment is one of the prominent public health problems in developing countries is the impaired developmental status of children under 5. and its effects can be permanent. Objective: To find out the prevalence and determinants of stunting and wasting among children under five years of age in the rural area of Wardha District of Maharashtra. Methods: Community-based cross-sectional study conducted among children aged from 1-month to 60-months (Under-5 years) in the rural area of Wardha district. Results: A total of 594 children were included in this study among which, 300 (50.5%) were males and the remaining 294 (49.5%) females. 122 (20.54%) children had wasting & 256 (43.09%) children had stunting. The overall study revealed more cases of stunting & fewer cases of wasting from the rural area of the Wardha district. A significant association was found between the prevalence of stunting and the age group. The proportion of children with severe stunting and wasting were maximum in the age group of 1 to 3 years. A significant association was found between stunting and initiation of breastfeeding within one hour of birth. A significant association was found between the prevalence of wasting and exclusive breastfeeding. Conclusion: The overall study shows that the scenario of stunting and wasting is similar across India. Future health promotion and education programs in Anganwadi centres should include a focused emphasis on good nutrition, IYCF practices and awareness campaigns for parents about undernutrition and its future consequences.

Determinants of Stunting and Wasting Among the Children Under Five Years of Age in Rural India

ABSTRAK Remaja dengan perawakan pendek ( stunting ) perlu memiliki resiliensi yang tinggi  agar mampu bangkit dan bertahan dalam situasi yang terjadi pada dirinya. Jika mereka mempunyai tingkat resiliensi yang rendah maka akan menimbulkan permasalahan psikososial yang semakin parah seperti depresi dan menarik diri. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui gambaran resiliensi remaja dengan stunting yang dilakukan melalui pendekatan deskriptif kuantitatif. Responden dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa SMPN 2 Jatinangor kelas VII dan kelas VIII yang mengalami stunting sebanyak 65 siswa. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan instrumen Resilience Scale for Adolescent (READ) yang telah diuji back translate methode dan dilakukan uji construct dengan nilai reliabilitas 0,86-0.90. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa 53,8% responden sudah memiliki resiliensi tinggi namun masih terdapat 46,2% responden memiliki tingkat resiliensinya rendah. Resiliensi rendah ditemukan mayoritas pada siswa berjenis kelamin laki-laki. Diperlukan upaya pendampingan yang terencana dan berkesinambungan untuk meningkatkan resiliensi, khususnya pada remaja yang masih memiliki resiliensi rendah, supaya mereka dapat dicegah dari depresi dan menarik diri serta dapat melewati masa remaja dengan baik. Kata kunci : Remaja , Resiliensi, Stunting ABSTRACT Adolescents who are stunting need to have high resilience to adopt in any difficult situations because of their physical condition. If they have low level of resilience it will lead to severe psychosocial problems such as depression and withdrawal. This study aimed to determine the resilience of adolescents who are stunting by quantitave descriptive method. Respondents were all stunting students of SMPN 2 Jatinangor class VII and class VIII. Data were collected using Resilience Scale for Adolescent (READ) instrument with reliability value 0.86-0.90. The results showed that some respondents (53.8%) or as many as 35 people have high resilience level, while some respondents (46.2%) or 30 people have low resilience. Low resilience is found in majority among female students. An intensive and well planning program is needed to improve resilience among students who still have low capability in adaptation process in order to accompany them successfully past adolescence.
